2nd Attempts at Casings

Thanks to all the help I've recieved here at the Shroomery, and all the info. I've been able to track down online, I finally have a good pin set. I'm using 4x 50/50 verm & peatmoss casings, each with 3 jars of colonized substrate. The substrate was straight damp verm. according to PFTek in 1/2 wide mouth jars. The spores are Peurto Ricans from Sporeworks (thanks guys).. Each casing contains 3 colnized jars of substrate with ~1" top/bottom of the 50/50 casing mix. Worked like a charm!

Thank you repobob! Here's a few more i took this morning... (the cap on that one shroom is just getting huge!) Question: Just curious how often i should be misting these? I misted once when I cased, and once again lightly.

If you want to have great flushes, the casing must remain moist throughout the growing cycle. Quote from The Mushroom Cultivator concerning the pin initiation stategy and watering for Agaricus species, but also applies to cased cubensis, page 144: "....If dry air becomes a problem, a light misting of the casing surface, two to five times daily, should keep the microclimate moist. In fact, some growers knock down the mycelium with a forcefull watering on the first day of initiation, others mist daily as a standard practice. However, once pinning has begun, any forcefull watering will kill a number of developing pins, and damage others......" FORCEFULL WATERING is not the same as gently misting, ok? and then on page 154: "...Other than light misting, any substantial waterings before the button stage can result in damaged pins. But once the mushrooms have reached button size, it is time to begin building the casing moisture back up to the peak reached at pre pinnig. The aim is to reach capacity just prior to the main harvest. This is accomplished by a series of daily, light to moderate waterings with a fine misting nozzle..."

thanks quetzalcoatl, basically, i did a LOT of reading before I started, both here on the shroomery message boards, as well as some online links I found to various teks. I for the most part stuck with the approach, simple is better. It's really not a lot of work. Now I just check them once or twice a day and pick when they are ready. I'm really happy how they are turning out though. So much better than my first attempt. Here's a few more pics. I picked a bunch of them tonight.

felix, thanks man! I have 5 casings in the terrarium right now. 4 new casings which were cased on 12/31 and 1 casing left over from my first attempt with 1 jar of colonized cambodian substrate on 12/18. The cambo casing seemed to be doing ok, but not producing a lot of fruits. So i figured I try adding more substrate. So i included 3 fully colonized 1/2 pint jars of the peurto rican substrate in each of the new casings (above). Funny, i seem to be getting at LEAST double the amount of fruits per casing now. and I'd LOVE to make you guys some prints, but, i don't really have the glove box or anything. yet.. ;(

BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!! hey freak...you get props for getting nice puerto rican fruits like that! i've had nothing but trouble with them...overlay, early maturation and sporulation, stunted growth, etc. tripped on them the first time this weekend also and had a creepy crawling trip, with HEAVY body load, a headache too! (but this was most likely my company, blah!) one question...once you cased the substrate, how many days did you let it colonize the casing layer before you initiated pinning?

well guys, i hope that you enjoy these pics! I'm really really happy with how these turned out! I've got another 7 days for these to grow before I have to chuck all my casings and put away my terrarium for a bit. I've got a new roommate moving in soon, and I'm not too sure how he feels yet about me growing magic mushrooms. We'll see how things go and maybe if things are cool, or after he moves out I can pick up this hobby again. Until then, guess all my stuff will have to sit in the closet. too bad too cause I have 5 more spore syringes that I got from sporeworks. however, I'll have to report back on how the trip goes with these peurto's. From what I've heard, they're pretty potent little funguys.

thank you Xazia, sorry to hear you had so many problems with them. So what do you mean by "creepy crawling" trip? Sounds like things didn't go so well.... ok, regarding your substrate question... here's a quick rundown of the logs i made while growing... 12/13 -- Innoculated 12 jars of 1/2 pint substrate with PR spores from sporeworks 12/31 -- Cased 4 casings with 12 jars of PR substrate 1/8 -- Casings went into terrarium 1/19 -- Pins starting to form in all four casings 1/23 -- Harvested some mature fruits from first flush 1/24 -- Harvest most of the fruits from first flush. There are still a few more left which aren't yet mature. The two casings which are doing the best were 100% colonized (white) on the top of the casing. The other two were not fully colonized and are now growing a bit slower then the others. Next time, I'd wait until the tops were totally white before putting them into the terrarium. This seems to work really nicely.

thanks Mklangelo... ok, here's the scoop. I figured I'd try a little taste of these .. so I just took 3 of the tall/thin ones at 7:00... WOW.. i'm already really feeling it .. I'm getting a pretty intense body high, feeling a little floaty... and the monitor is getting a little brighter.. these little guys are really potent, because i wasn't getting this feeling from 10 of the cambos i grew... i'll write back in a bit...

How did you mix the casing on that? Did you use hyfrated lime and if so how much? Also on the substrate, did you cut ut up into cucumber like slices or break it up into 1 or 2" square pieces?

Hi Everyone, I'ts been a while since I last posted. (May '02). I had a roommate move in and he wasnt' down with the whole drug thing.
My dog spot will be trying for a 4th time to cultivate cubenzies. I've got all the supplies and am about to start clenaing and disinfecting my kitchen. I'm really looking forward to a wonderful end product. It's also that time of year and we have close to 100% humidity. Should be excellent conditions for a good flush.(or two hopefully)
I'll keep you posted on my progress and will be taking a log as well as lots of pictures. My last post included over 30 images.
Thanks!
