Measuring Casing Depth?

Hey guys I just cased my monotub with 10lbs of poo today and I tried a new way to measure my casing depth. I took a piece of paper and it cut it into 1/2" strips and then taped the ends together to make circles. In theory this should of worked great. But my substrate wasn't totally even and it just didn't work out how I planned.
My question is, How do you measure your casing depth? At first I used to guess but I found that I just load WAY too much on there. I think that an inch is a half inch or something like that. So I just load up the casing and I end up having to take some off. BUt this time I tried the circle thing and it just didn't work. I still have to put some more casing on it when I get home because I didn't prepare enough the first time. SO hopefully when I get home it will be cool enough to use.
Peace OUt~

i would mark the sides of the box kinda like you said, 1/2" increments or so, but just take a clean pen (or glass laborator stirring rod if your inclined to awesomeness), and stick it in. hell a clean plastic ruler would work, it just would disrupt a little more. mark the pen if you want, or just eyeball the depth on the pen as you pull it out.
this way you can take multiple readings all around of tub to check for evenness.

First read my pinning strategy to learn the fine points of level substrate and even casing levels. You can use disinfected 1/2-3/4" PVC pipe the length of your containers fill, level, then pull the pipes and fill in the depressions, perfect everytime!

I used a closet once setup a nice little lab trouble was all the shit that was in there ended up in the bedroom that pissed off the GF then I ended up dumping her as she was getting in the way of my sterile culture technique! Ya I got priorities too!!!"

Since my casings are never more than 1/2" I use the metal lid rings from my jars. They are exactly 1/2 inch and because of the opening in the middle, they only leave a very small area to fill when they're removed. You can use several of them at the same time and they pretty much ensure your casing will be level with the substrate, as opposed to level with the tub.
I know someone has a pic of this.

Putting down all those lids then removing them seems to be alot more work than two 1/2" lengths of PVC IME but hey thats the way they did it back in the day when they were doing huge trays and the workers were getting paid by the hour. LOL Definitely looking good there Premedman1! Nice thing with the lids is after removing them all ya need is a good rap and it all fills in by itself.

Ahh, your method does sound a lot faster Hyphae, just like screening out concrete with using 2 by 4's
