I went to HomeDepot today and they said that had pine straw by the bail in a trailer on the side but it was poring down rain and they said to come back later. Is pine straw what i want they said it goes for $3.50 a bail. Is this sound good does anyone know where i could find it precut and bagged since iv read you need to cut it to 2-3 inches long.

go to hobby lobby, michaels, or any other craft store and look for bales of hay there. I dont think pine straw is what you need.

majik_monkey said: first of all, straw and hay are two different things. straw is what is left after grains have been harvested; its bright yellow, rough and dry. Hay is more akin to grass and is usually green(ish), not coarse, and not dry. Straw is what everyone uses, but some supplement their substrate with hay. With hay, I belive stamets says to not use more than 20% (not sure about this %) hay if used at all because it IS contaminant prone.
