mini casing

ok so i had a stalled jar that wouldnt finish colonizing so i cut off the uncolonized part, crumbled up the 1/2pint cake in a ziplock.. then dumped it into an empty margarine container.. i didn't put any verm down before the crumbled cake.. and then i put verm over the top and misted it. i covered it with tin foil, poked holes in it, and then covered it with another piece of tin foil and stuck it into the incubator. that was 3 days ago, i checked it today and theres no myc poking through and i was wondering if i messed it up because i didn't put any verm underneath the cake.. does this matter? what will it effect besides moisture level and how can i make up for the missing verm.. misting the casing?

A lot of people don't use the bottom layer.
For a half pint, you'd want a real thin top layer.
Give it another day or two, make sure that 2nd layer of foil is loose.

yea the casing layer barely covers the substrate... the 2nd layer of foil is loose.. what about misting though?

No need to mist, the foil keeps the casing from drying out. Just let it do it's thing and check it again on day 5.

I did the same thing....had a bit of subsstate left over, so made a mini-case in a small gladware container.
The lil' bugger surprised me, it was treated pretty badly but still managed to produce more than it rightfully should have!
Hope yours turns out as well!!

i did the same thing with my first attempt at cakes, contam city. but there are too many variables where i could have gone wrong, so its hard to say. I had great luck with rye though, fully colonized in like 8 days and pinning took 10 days to start. now i'm just waiting for them to mature.... too much waiting! btw, my FC is constant 70-71 @ ~90 RH, it consists of one sterlite tub w/ a plexi window, six air exchange holes stuffed with poly, and a fish take aerator with poly stuffed in the tub. so far so good! rye grain is my preferred tek. next time i will get a LC going. oh, and the syringe i bought was from sporeworks, not bad...... of course, i wont be buying syringes any more once this badboy fruits. gonna print them on glass and inoculate several more jars(pint) of rye. I've learned that the key to rye is not to over hydrate. the formula is something like 90ml water and 125 ml dry grain. if i soak the grain, i have to reduce the amount of water i put in the jars with the grain before i PC. the below casing was made with unsoaked rye, as the soaked ones had too much water and was contam city.

Yes you do...
I'd recommend smelling your casing to see if it smells south...stalled jars are usually a result of bateria contamination, if you dont seen any myc overtaking the casing within the next week that is indeed what it is.

everything should be fine , wait it out a couple more days. what casing layer did you use? oh just verm?
i would have used a better mix, maybe 50/50 or 60/40 next time.
