holy crap this is a weird movie.
a friend (who is very into old avant-garde cinema) recommended it to me - and it arrived via netflicks yesterday.
i've never read Petronius' Satyricon, but my roomate who has said the movie was at best loosely based on it. it seemed more like a barrage of strange images, and a depiction of roman decadence more than anything.
anyway, if anybody out there considers themselves a film buff, check this movie out. you won't be disappointed. you might not also find it to make much sense, nor to be a particularly good movie. but it certainly was strange.

I haven't seen this yet...though I am a big Fellini fan.

my friend Maz (who recommended it) is also a big Fellini fan. he recommended this to me, sasying that he thought Fellini's earlier films were better, but that i might enjoy Satyricon the most.
i'm sure a movie store in nyc would have this - just make sure to get a copy that has subtitles instead of dubbing! (tried to watch it for a sec with the english audio, because it seemed like the italian was lagging or something, but it was far better than the dubbed track... *ewwww dubbing*)

Yeah this movie is nuts!
The dubbed version is TERRIBLE, especially because one of the things that makes this movie so cool is all of the layers of sound and music.
I reccomend watching this movie at high volume and with a high volume of marijuana.

I'm watching this right now, about an hour and a half into it. This is my first Fellini film, despite warnings from others that I should watch 8 1/2 first. I like it, but I don't think it is nearly as strange as some of the films by Jodorowsky and Lynch. Actually this is somewhat boring. It's definitely one of those films I'm going to have to watch more than once to take it all in.
