spawn jars oxygen level

Assistance is much appreciated!
When innoculating grain jars with syringes, how important is it to leave the holes uncovered (can I tape them)so that the spawn can breath?
I am planning to make my own half gallon grain jars, which I will do grain to grain transfers, but the only jars I could get have a regular lid (with no holes in it) and I dont have a drill gun or anything like that to poke holes on the top.
The grain jars will already have 3-4 inches of air space on the upper part of the jar because obviously its not filled to the top with grains. Will this be enough air for the 2 months it will take to colonize the jar??? Or will it need more oxygen?
I am figuring that the jars will have a lower contam rate if theres no hole on top...
experienced suggestions are very welcomed

Just use a screwdriver and something heavy as a hammer (or a hammer if you have one) to bang a hole in the top. Not quite as neat but works fine.

It will need more gas exchange. If it has some and is kept at the right temp, it will colonise MUCH faster than 2 months.

Not if you stuff the hole with polyfill.....

neat experiment otto... I see the IMPORTANCE of air exchange seems like i could learn lots from you... a couple of ?'s if you dont mind...
After reading your reply I think I will just buy a bunch of mason jars... will a synthetic filter disc such as the one advertised on mycosupply be good for air exchange? You think these filter discs are reusuable?
The 1/2 gallon grain jars I buy from a shroomery sponsor always takes me at least 2 months to fully colonize. I keep them at 80F, anything higher and I have experienced way too much yellow piss at the bottom... I shake them once after they are fully colonized what is your secret for colonizing MUCH faster then 2 months?
btw otto wtf are you doing up so late australian time.... mycology work I presume lol just kidding
thanks a bunch!

The filter discs work fine but they are kinda pricey. If you can find some tyvek you can make your own. The 1/2 gallon jars take so long because they are so big. A quart jar should take no longer that 2 weeks at a good temp.

As said above the disks are expensive. Apparently you can get tyvek for free from the post office, but maybe not in Amsterdam... Otherwise, go to a pet store and buy fish tank filter wool - this is Polyfill. Or go to a big department store and buy 'polyester pillow stuffing' - same shit and this will be cheaper than a pet shop. You simply punch the hole in the lid, wad up a little bit of polyfill and stuff it in the hole. A bag of polyfill will last you AGES.

Use a Liquid culture to start them, shake after innocculation, then once again when they are 25% colonised. The more Liquid culture you use, the quicker it will go. My fastest yet is 5 days.

I think I have a problem at least the first step to dealing with it is admitting I have one....

I always got a few contams with tyvek. Polyfill works great. The best and simplest filter I've come across is micropore tape. $3 at Wal-mart.
Just use a screwdriver to make a hole like otto said, then tape over both sides with this stuff. Couldn't be simpler.

Tape is nice and simple, but be sure not to make your hole TOO big as I have found it tends to let a lot of moisture out and dry out your substrate a little.
