THE YERBA EXPERIMENT pics>>>

I've had this great idea after reading The Coffee Project - effects of coffee on mycelia, so I did a little research... Ilex Paraguarensis also known as yerba mate contains a lot of Caffeine, people in South America, specially Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, and the south of Brazil use it daily in the form of an infusion known as mate as a coffee substitute. The fact that it is natural, high in caffeine, potassium and magnesium make it good for experimentation.
Here are some useful links about yerba >>>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yerba_mate http://noborders.net/mate/ http://www.nativayerbamate.com/ http://www.yerba-mate.com/
So the experiment begun...
First I filled 2 Containers, one with dry vermiculite and one with dry yerba. I added water...
3 minutes later
Both the verm and the yerba absorbed some water
30 minutes later
The yerba absorbed more water than the verm, it also released some caffeine and nutrients as it is soluble in water (duh, it's a plant)
1 hour later

It absorbed just a little more water...
Then I drained (It looks weird, but it's the first thing I could think of!!)

As you can see ^^^ the yerba seems to hold more water than the vermiculite.
I dunked 2 cakes in some "mate" solution but they got contaminated before I could see any result. So what do you guys think, does it have potential as a substrate? I'll experiment some more and post the results

I've heard of the effects of Electromagnetic fields effecting mushrooms, however I did not find it a very interesting prospect of hooking up a teslacoil anywhere near my growbox. However I must say this is a very nice test with plausable answers, I may even give it a shot with the ole poo methode I'm about to start.

Try using that mate solution as an LC. Or a combination of mate solution and karo. You would have to dilute it down, of course, because it is so dark.
I would really like to see the results of a caffeinated liquid culture. =]

Idea: Make an infusion of mate using boiling water, let cool and hydrate dry poo with it, then pasteurize in oven bags in a water resevoir.
As a side note, the stuff tastes great! And if you ever go to SA it's a good way to smuggle cubes back into the country - open up a yerba bag, slide in a baggie of shrooms, seal it back up!
Not that I'VE ever done that though.....

I agree with you Hypercube, mate tastes great, it's a little bitter but the flavor is unique, like a very strong tea. It's better than coffee too, completely natural
