I had the enormous good fortune to see Frank Zappa live in Ottawa, Canada, in either 72 or 73 -- can't remember now which it was. I believe it was 73.
A lengthy and amazingly great concert. He had what he himself refers to as his "dream band" on that tour -- Napoleon Murphy Brock, Ruth and Ian Underwood, Terry Bozzio, Jean Luc Ponty and I forget who all else. There were a lot of folks on that stage.
I've seen an awful lot of great bands in my time, but I rate that concert right up there in my personal Top Twenty concerts.
Price of admission for an almost three hour concert of incredible music? Four Canuck bucks.

Never seen any of his DVDs, no.
But it really was a great show. My friends and I had been debating for days whether to go and see it or not. Rumors abounded at the time of Frank's whimsical interpretations of what a Zappa "concert" really should be. The current rumor was that one recent concert he gave consisted of the band wheeling him onstage in a barber chair, giving him a shave, then wheeling him offstage. That was it -- no music or anything. I don't know if anything like that ever really happened or if it was just rumors circulating among dopers. But I came THIS close to just saying "fuck it" and saving my money (four Canuck Bucks was a significant amount of money to me at that point in my life).
I will say that when he ambled out on stage at the beginning of the concert, he grabbed a mike and asked, "So.... do you want the freakout show or do you want the music show?" or something similar -- I forget the exact phrasing. The crowd roared, "Music!"
So he turned to the band members and said "All right boys, let's give 'em some music," and they swung into Pygmy Twilite and it just got better from there. Almost three hours.
I have no idea what he would have done if the crowd had answered "freak out", though.
I'd pay a LOT more than four Canuck bucks to see that exact same concert again.

I'll add my support to the Zappa thread. I went through a HUGE zappa stage when I was in highschool. With my part time job and no real bills, I spent a lot of money on CDs back then.
My favoriate (or close to...) is The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life. A live album from his big band tour in 88. But you can't ever go wrong with The Grand Wazoo or Waka/Jawaka, either.

Yeah, Zappa rules. My favorite album of his is Zoot Allures. It doesn't get much attention, but it is fabulous. Black Napkins is an awesome track. I also love his work with Captain Beefheart.
His music catalog is huge. I'll probly never get around to hearing all over it. I have over 10 gb of zappa music (111 hours) and I am still missing stuff.

God I love Zappa. Go to his site and find the link to where they're selling the fender.
It was given to zappa by hendrix and played by both. Starting bid is $1,000,000!!
I emailed him offering my soul and a case of beer. He never replied.

Thanks for the attatchments man, I can never get enough Zappa. Lately when it comes to Zappa, I've been in a phase of mainly listening to Hot Rats and Grand Wazoo, along with watching Baby Snakes once in a blue moon.
I heard the other day that Zappa did not smoke weed, nor did he allow anyone in his band to, anyone know anything about this?

I've heard that he was drug free....well, assuming that you don't count coffee and cigarettes as drugs. He may have drank i don't know. I have a video of him chastising an audience member that had offered him a bong full of weed.
And Hot Rats is a great freaking album. Willie The Pimp is definately my favorite from that album. Captain Beefheart is awesome!

Yeah, he didnt use drugs. He tried weed, I dont know about any trips. I dont think he stopped band members though.
It is a trip in itself to think someone could make such psychedelic music without imbibing once in a while.

How many albums? More like 150. Then he and his band, The Mothers of Invention, put out about the same. Zappa had his own studio and was able to spit out albums like crazy.

I watched that documentary. It was pretty good, but honestly that was probably the least interesting portion of Zappa's career. I followed that documentary up by listening to Waka Jawa, The Grand Wazoo, Hot Rats, and Overnite Sensation. I've now doubled back to Waka Jawaka and might repeat the whole set.

Hard to believe that Freak Out! is 53 years old today. Several songs on this album could be released today and sound new. Not to mention the lyrics on a song like Trouble Every Day that are still relevant today.
