heating pads?

I have heard about the use of heating pads in speeding up inocculation time, i have 10 jars going right now and only one is going at all unfortunately (albeit pretty well), and based on my last experience, it is just going really slow, presumably because its winter in a cold state my home is too big to turn the heat up, and ive heard talk of using heating pads, however i assume its not a regular one, right? those get really warm. I did see one on a shroom site that said it is used for germination of seeds but can also be used greatly for mushrooms, and someone else was talking about them as well. Are these things worth getting? anyone have any experience with these? does anyone know of a good way to raise the temperature for my jars other that works well?

You have to be very careful with heating pads, if the bottom of the jars heat up, it'll create convection and dry them out. I've measured a 7 degree difference between the top and bottom of the SUBSTRATE in a quart jar left to colonize on a heating blanket with a tub lid inbetween. I wouldn't recommend this with PF cakes, but for grain jars, I now just stick them in a cooler with the drain plug open and let them go. It takes longer, but I don't care.
The "tub in tub" method (or TiT) is really popular. It's easy to make and provides optimal conditions.

Heating pads are hard to control and they are a fire hazard, the propogation mats the you refered to is what you would want to get, but you need to get the thermostat controller for it, total cost about 60-80 bucks!! A free way incubate is to place jars in a box close it and put it on top of your water heater (If its indoors), or on top of your fridge, a closet with water heater is better because its dark in there!! I still use this method and it has never failed me. Check out some links for Tit incubator http://www.fungifun.org/pf/incubator.htm http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/7961 http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/7970

I use a heating pad exclusively for my incubation period. I set it on low and put a thin towel between the jars and the pad. Works fine for me even if it isn't ideal

Try using the "Hydrofarm" brand heat pads. they keep the temp from 10-20 degrees above your general room temp. i also live in a cold-ass state, and that sped up my time a hell of alot, but it will also spped up time cor contaminates also. if your a clean person the hydrofarm heating pad should halp a hell of alot without the high cost. ($24.oo) good luck!! check out www.hydroponicequipment.com

Those seedling mats tend to cook things.
If your room is 70F, the are 90F.
75F, they are 95F.
I would be very careful with one.

I have a regular heating mat atop my jars in a chest. They seem to be doing fine, however I have noticed that the myc grows upwards towards the heat..

You could try making a "heat-bomb", it's a fish tank heater enclosed in a plastic or glass container (big jug, gallon bottle, etc). It works flawlessly. This is my heat-bomb (the oval thing in the middle), I use it to heat my incubator.
