Pasteurizing Casing on Stove Top
    #5252048 - 02/01/06 05:21 PM (18 years, 11 hours ago)

When pasteurizing my casing in a pot on the stove how exactly should i go about it? Im doing a 60/40 verm/coco coir with some oyster shells. Anyways, do i prepare the casing with the desired amount of water, and then pasteurize or do i need to add extra water for pasteurizing on stove top? And also, once it is at 160-180, should i turn off stove and cover or just lower temp?

Just do it on the stove top if it's for a small project. You can simply add the verm/coir to a pot with the desired amount of casing material and then add enough water to barely cover the contents. Heat up the contents while stirring occasionally until they reach 150-160 degrees. Then immediately shut off the stove top and cover the pot until the contents are cool enough to handle with your hands. Ring out the contents with your clean or glooved hands until a drop or 2 drips from the casing material. Then apply evenly...

If it's for a few projects; heat several pots of water on the stove top until the water reaches 160 degrees and add it to a cooler or Rubbermaid tub full of the casing or substrate material continously until the contents are slightly submerged, cover and allow to cool. Use as stated above.....
