It's really difficult to...

Since I've been doing this I've noticed that it's really difficult to distinguish between what's "good" on the mycelium and what's "bad"!!! All I've seen is really healthy looking white spots and veins on what I'm doing, but I've also noticed some WHITE fuzzy spots that don't look like the veins. Now... IF the fuzz is white and not some other colors- is this still OK to bring out and let the fruit grow? Thanx:)

Im debating the same question my self right now. And right now Im saying go for it. If I have any problems when the cake is fuly colonized and I birth, then I am just going to go ahead and cut the bad half off. Right now no one can say if there are any ill health effects to the shrooms from cobweb mold.

mycelium is often mistaken for cobweb mold...dont fret. Mycelium sometimes gets a whispy look to it, during its more hieghtened periods of growth...more often than not it is NOT cobweb mold...especially inside jars. My advice is to look at many pics of cobweb mold and youll begin to get a feel for what is and what isnt.

Have you initiated pinning? My friend claims that right before the pins start to form, the mycelium gets fuzzy. My friend claims that white fuzz is usually fine. Cobweb mold looks fuzzy, but is more grey than white.

After reading the serious post about contamination I'm worried now... The jars are all white now (has been for four days now) *EXCEPT* for the part that started first which got A LOT of moisture- by moisture I mean BIG drops of water in the jar that made most of the mycelium indent towards the middle of the jar!!! I used all necessary sterile precautions when preping the substrate... using the PF TEK and PF syringes. The thing that worries me is that the places that looked as if it got damaged by the amount of water turned kind of grey! Now, when this first started to happen when there was a little water it looked kind of grey and fuzzy also... so is this normal for the mycelium that comes in contact with water to turn kind of grey and get a little fuzzy?!?! Thanx for the help...

Don't worry, I always have big drops of water in my jars, and I've found that the biggest the drops were, the healthiest were my cakes.

Excess moisture on the mycelium can cause it to change colors. I think the color is usually clearish to yellow. The most common contaminate (for my friend at least) from excess moisture is "wet spot". It is a bacteria which leaves behind a sticky snot-like ooze that smells like rotten apples or dirty socks (no need to open the jars, you can smell it just handling a contaminated jar). My friend wouldn't worry too much... give them some time and see what happens. If no bright colors or nasty smells show up then you are probably fine. For more info on excess water, check the mmgg or the pftek. I think both talk about it.
