 Fish Tank Heaters - Heating element on a rampage!

Sorry if this question sounds foolish, but the fish tank heater used in my TiT incubator has recently been ignoring the set temperature and continuing to heat well beyond this designation. Today I woke to find my incubator at near thermal death temperature (~98 degrees!). The only option that I've had has been to pull the plug as it gets too high.
I allow the temperature to cool and the heater to acclimate for at least an hour after this happens, so what am I doing wrong? Is my heater just busted? Has anyone had similar problems?

It seems as if you forgot to add a sumerigible water pump to criculate the water. If thats not the problem it would be logical to think that your fish tank heater is crap. What temp do you have your heater set at. Even the cheap ass ones that I have seen even have a +/- temp control on them I would lower the temp asap.

try setting the temp lower on the heater.

You don't need a water pump. I don't use one. I would definitely keep adjusting the temp until you get it right or get another heater.

I didn't use a pump for over a yr till I relized I was getting hot/cold spots. Once I came out and it said 90F so I went and bought a 15$ pump and the problem was fixed.

^^If you're using a big TiT, then a pump can be beneficial but it's generally not necessary. Matter of opinion I suppose...

Oh, I have no doubt that it helps. I'm just saying it's not a neccessity. I have found that throwing a towel or blanket over the whole thing helps to insulate the heat better once you have it adjusted to where you want.

I'm following you, friend. This guy can't turn the heat down. The thermostat on his heater is busted. It's like when your car thermo is stuck open and your car overheats. I'd just suggest getting a cheap replacement. Not losing your time and hard work due to myc thermal death is well worth $15-$20.

Thanks for the replies, it sounds like my heater must just be toast. I've had it on the lowest setting for the last few cycles of me attempting to fix it, and it still doesn't stop heating. The water level is still high and it seems to be heating fairly evenly so I'm not sure if thats the problem. Looks like I'll just have to shell out some cash for another heater.

Oh, make sure that heater is fully submersible. Some have a water line marked on them and aren't supposed to be completely under water. If it's not fully submersible, you may have shorted out the thermostat.

Man yesterday I finaly got my hands on a fish tank heater..I was so excited I plugged it in and put it in the water..than it exploded..should have put it in then plugged it in

You're actually supposed to put it in the water and wait a little before turning it on so that the glass can get to the same temp as the water. At least that's how mine is.

I've kept fish ( fresh water and salt water reef tanks ) for a decade and have found that even the $30-40 heaters will fail within a few years. When they do, it kills all your shit.
Try going a different route. I've included some links for supplies to set up a fool proof incubator for under $100.

I've used the above supplies on an incubator made out of a used freezer ( stand up variety ) with the cooling components unplugged. You can plug it back in and unplug the heating elements for stimulating fruiting ( fridge use only ). I've had the same incubator with the original supplies I mentioned above for many years with NO problems.
I have plans and pictures if anyone is interested in creating a large size incubator for cheap and no one will even know your growing shrooms because all they see is a fridge/merchandiser/freezer etc.

What and how do you use that fogger it is just the metal plate that makes the ultrasonic fogg. you must have to make some sort of home made humidfier with it.

Put the fogger in the top shelf of the incubator in shallow water in a low profile container without the lid. The fogger's fog will overflow the container and fall through the incubator increasing the humidity.

I used to keep fish too...for over 20 years.
I never had a problem with Ebo Jager submersible aquarium heaters breaking down on me.
In fact I still have one Ebo Jager heater that is over 18 years old...
and I have been using it constantly for the past 5 years colonizing jars in a TIT setup.
I have used probably 8 other brands and have gotten mixed results from them.

I agree. Ebo's are the best. There hard to locate now a days. I haven'nt seen them in fish stores for a year or so. If you have a link for them and you guys want to use an aquarium heater. Ebo's are the best to use.
Look for a solid green heater. Those are Ebo Jagers [image] [/image]
