O2 and CO2 question
    #5247636 - 01/31/06 04:47 PM (18 years, 1 month ago)

in my terranium, when there is c02 buildup from the fungus, does the c02 float to the top or is oxygen lighter than c02 and it floats to the bottom or is it all mixed?

C02 will sink, I do believe. That's why fanning is neccesary.

thanks for the fast reply!

im installing a fish pump system so i dont have to fan, and im trying to figure out where my output holes (for c02 to escape) should be on top or bottom... and from what your saying i should put the holes on the bottom.

be sure to modify the pump with a coffee filter so it sucks in semi-clean air. probably not nessecary but a good idea, i think.

Neither. There will be natural circulation in the tub, so the CO2 will not sit on the bottom. It is also not necessary to filter the air in any way that enters a growing area. Trying to catch contaminants with a coffee filter is a bit like trying to catch mosquitos with a butterfly net. It won't help. Circulation, and lots of it is the key.

Yeah that will work.....you might want to look in to something like this

you can check this thread out  Air Supply

The stats:
Maximum Pressure: 3psi
Maximum Capacity: 22 lpm / 1,320 lites pre hour
394 gph /6.5 gpm
24,800 cc/minute capacities
Power Consumption: 8w

My FC area:
26' Length
36' Height
23' Depth

Total cubic inches: 21528
cubic feet: 12.4
gallon: 93 / 351 liters

2 FAE pre hour 12.4 cu. ft. divided by 60 = 4.8 CFM cubic feet pre minute / 135.8 liters minuets / 35.9 gpm

So this air pump will exchange the volume of air 3.7 times an hour in my FC through 4 hoses.

you can toss in your numbers if ya wanted to.

Quote:

2 FAE pre hour 12.4 cu. ft. divided by 60 = 4.8 CFM cubic feet pre minute / 135.8 liters minuets / 35.9 gpm

So this air pump will exchange the volume of air 3.7 times an hour in my FC through 4 hoses.
-------

So I am a little confused about the math:

12.4 (cubic feet) * 2 ((full air exchanges) per hour) = 24.8 ((cubic feet) per hour)

24.8 ((cubic feet) per hour) = 3.1 ((US gallons) per minute)

So, 3.1gpm does not equal 35.9gpm, unless I am misreading something.

394 ((US gallons) per hour) = 52.7 ((cubic feet) per hour)

52.7 ((cubic feet) per hour) / 12.4 (cubic feet) = 4.2 air exchanges per hour

So, 4.2 air exchanges per hour does not equal 3.7 air exchanges per hour, unless I am misreading something.

?
