well, i never installed amaroK until yesterday, because i don't use KDE and didn't want to spend the time to upgrade all these libraries that i never use. late last night, though, the screenshots on their site convinced me to try it out. seriously, this destroys XMMS as the "best" media player for gnu/linux. what with the library functions, the playlist tracking functions, the dynamic collection functions, etc - i think i'm sold.

One thing I hate is that it has to delete the album covers is gleams from amazon.com after 90 days, as per their terms of service.... of course it's open source so you could change it if you wanted to violate the TOS

does it really do that? lame!
a simple enough script could be made to back up the folder and replace it all the time..

Or make the files read-only after it creates them.
Seriously though, if this program is so great, why does it require bloatware KDE? I'll never understand why so many people support only that platform.

Because Linus says to avoid KDE and use Gnome as a desktop?

Because it is fairly easy to create a GUI as compared to the alternatives... of couse, the resulting program is bloated and slow, but it was easy to write.

the best part of amarok is the lyrics tab...
also, if your using amarok, do yourself a favor and get a widget for super karamba that gives you play controls and displays track title and album art...

actually i've heard quotes from linus saying that gnome is crap and that he uses kde.
i think i spoke too soon with amarok - after i loaded my 40,000+ song collection into it, it seems to be having lots of freezing up troubles.
it doesn't support only KDE - you can run it in gnome (as i'm doing), and i believe in osx (if you install qT) - however it requires all the kde & qT libs

i think blinkidiot was being sarcastic. i used to love kde over gnome, but no longer. the only qt app i use is k3b.

amarok is definitely the way to go if you're into music databases. I used it for awhile, but I prefer beep media player (it's an updated xmms pretty much). I'm more into dragging/dropping directories into the playlist editor.

Can any of our resident Linux veterans explain this 'bloat' thing to me? I realize I'm new, but whenever I've offered up a suggestion for a Linux project (see above), people cry bloat and I'm left scratching my head. It seems like a bunch of stone age ideology to me, but then again, I am new.

maybe "slowness due to unnecessary code" - something like that.

I get that part of it. But sometimes I hear it more in response to additional features or eye candy being added to something. Like I saw somebody refer to amaroK as being bloated because it had the Wikipedia feature.

Well the classic Unix ideal is for programs to be small and simple. It should "do one thing and do it well." Some people stick to this principle more than others do. I think anyone who would whine about a wikipedia function being bloatware has no business putting KDE on his system in the first place.
If you don't care how bloated your software is, then by all means KDE is the right GUI for you. It seems nobody cares about efficiency on that platform. I call it a "platform" because that's what they treat it as. They could treat it as a mere WM with some window dressing, which it is. They could make simple, portable apps, but instead they choose to build on top of overcomplex libs and generate much larger, more dependent code than they need to.

well i got annoyed at the official (1.38 i believe) amarok release not supporting m4as. or, by installing gstreamer plugins, it would play them - but it would not include them in the catalog.
i'm in the process of trying to install the svn version of 1.4 - having a lot of dependency issues, though - it seems that the .dev svn is meant for sarge only (which seems strange, since the current version of amarok is meant for unstable) and won't install on my testing/unstable system. so i'm working on doing the install from source. and having some stupid "QT doesn't have thread support" problem...
i'll let you guys know what i think of 1.4 if i can ever get it running
