Many computer questions...so if you know your stuff come on in
    #5241982 - 01/30/06 12:49 PM (18 years, 3 months ago)

I have a dell dimension that came with a Pentium 4 chip that's 2.0ghrz, 256 of ram it says 64mb video card. The computer was good for when I was in school but since I'm done and got my B.S I want to make it better/ more up to date. I just got done upgrading the RAM to 768 which is indeed better for loading times than the original 256. This bring me to my first question
1.I need to upgrade the Video card to play a game that requires a 128 mg or above card. I wanted to know what kind of card my computer uses now. So I went to my device manager and found it says it is using an Intel(R)82845G/GL/GE/PE/GE/GV graphics controller whatever the hell that is. I look at tigerdirect and the provide pictures of the slots and how to tell them apart. I decide to pop the case open and take a look. After doing so I notice what looked to be a PCI slot because it was white and made during 2003 when I think PCI slots were popular but there is no card in there. So is that the right slot. I know it's not a RAM slot because I used them up. If that is indeed a video card slot then what in the hell is this computer running off of? When I first installed battle field 2 on it it said I had a 64 mg card and it needs a 128 so where in the hell is it?

2.Secondly later I am thinking about trying my lucky at building my own system. Since I have components of this current system could I use them towards another system. Meaning Can I buy a case and a mother board that can hold 2 Hard drives and two CPU's?

3.Are CPU's like RAM were I can put my current processor which is a Pentium 4 2.0 ghz and get another hopefully by that time maybe a 4.0ghz and run them together? Like adding a 512 RAM stick and a 256 RAM stick together?

4.I want to also keep my current hard drive which is 40 gig's and get another that's like 300 - 400 gigs and have one for music, movies, games, high quality pictures etc and use the other HD for normal everyday uses. Is it ok doing that? Or is one really big HD fine and not worth the trouble of two. I was worried about having just one in case or a corruption,Trojan, worm, virus etc.

5. Do the new computers now use pretty much just use the DDR2 sticks that are 240 pin? I have only two slots on my motherboard and have the stock 256 MB DDR SDRAM, PC2100 / 266 MHz, Non-Parity, Unbuffered and added a 512MB of the same for a total of 678mb of RAM. So I wanted to know if it's ok to use those two stick and I happen to have another spare 256MB stick that I can't use because I only have two spare slots open. So could I get a mother board that has 4 slots and add one more 512 or 1 gig stick in for either 1.5 or 2.0 gig's of RAM?

6. Are there mother boards that incorporate DDR and DDR2 RAM slots like they do PCI and PCI express slots?

7. Do people use two video cards i.e a PCI and a PCI express? If so what's the point? Do you plug in your monitor direct to the video card instead of the stock computer location.

8. What are the purposes of having two operating systems? Does one run off of one processor... one hard drive... or do they both handle everything at the same time.

9. Is windows really that bad? They do have much more software available... is luniex going to have more compatible software? available?

10. Is it really worth building your own? Do you actually save a lot of $? Get better performance for the buck?

That's my questions for now I'm sure I will edited this once I think of other things. Thanks a lot for the responses

*******UPDATE*******

I looked at microsoft's website on finding and installing graphics card's and found to look for the card because it's right behind were the monitor is pluged into the computer. I looked back there and nothing! Then I read a post =HERE.
Sp now I think my video card is intergrated into the motherboard too. The 4500s dimision I have is a compact case style so it does make sence. The slot that looks to be the PCI slot has it's on slot cut-out looking thing for a component to go there.

It's onboard video, which is integrated into the motherboard. Integrated video is not that great. You could put a PCI video card in there.

You can have 2 hard drives, just use 1 CPU. There are different kinds of CPU's and motherboards. AMD CPU's are better than Intel.

No, a motherboard is just going to have a place for one CPU. A 4.0Ghz would be more than enough.

Alot of people have 2 hard drives. You could install the OS on the 40GB and use the bigger one for your other files.

Most new computer will use DDR400(PC3200) ram. I'm not sure on the mixing/matching of ram, maybe someone else will answer that one. I think it would be best to buy a matching pair ram.

I'm not familiar with DDR2 standards.

If you add a video card then you would just use the video card and not the onboard video. Almost any video card would be better than the onboard video, as onboard video uses part of your ram and slows down the system.

Some people like Windows and some like Linux. Linux, from what I hear, is alot more stable than windows & more user friendly. Both operating systems would run off of the hard drive/s.

I like windows. I downloaded Ubuntu, a version of Linux, and am planning to run both XP & Linux on my pc. I don't think most games/programs are going to work on Linux. Correct me if wrong on that.

You will save money and get quality parts. Plus you will learn what makes computers work. It's fun building a computer and you will appreciate it more if you put it together.

Hope some of that helps ya.

Alot of computers that are baught and use onboard video have an AGP slot. It will most likely be brown.

You can run 2 x 2GHz chips in a motherboard, but you would have to buy a dual CPU motherboard. You would be better off buying a single chip dual core AMD X2 or Opteron and a compatible motherboard

If you get a motherboard with 4 ram slots you will be able to mix and match 512 and 256 chips, but your performance won't be so great because your PC2100 is limiting faster speeds that PC3200 or PC4000 can hit.

I haven't heard of any motherboards that have both DDR and DDR2 slots, doubt they would ever be made too.

Building your own system is much better than buying pre-built brand name PC. You save money and come out with a better system.

Ok just a little thing to clear things up incase you haven't figured it out or read about it yet. =P

PCI slots came around for faster performance after ISA slots. So companies started making video cards for PCI. Then that was too slow, so they made the Advanced graphics port (AGP slot), specificaly for graphics cards only, with the PCI slots sticking around to support other addon cards. Now, the industry is in the middle of switching to PCI-E (PCI Express), where all slots are once again the same, and they all have even faster bandwidth capabilities. This also allows for things like SLI, where you insert 2 video cards (of the same model) side by side, and connect them internaly, thus boosting the performance by whatever %.

So, concerning video cards, you're looking for an AGP card, and you'll get a good price on them too because theyre being phased out for newer PCI-E cards made for the next-gen PCI-E motherboards.

Avoid ALL cards made by Nvidia/ATI that have stupid extended names like 'special edition (SE)', 'LE' or the like. These are usualy watered down versions of the original. What you DO want to look for is words like GT, XT, Ultra, etc. I'm very tired right now so sorry if i cant link stuff, but generaly, avoid the lower numbers in a generation of cards. So radeons have: XX300, XX600, and XX800. (XX=generation. but the # system is always the same). Avoid the 300's like the plague. 600's are mid range, (600 PRO or XT's are pretty good) and 800's are pricy but great. Same goes for Nvidia, they have their own #ing system. Avoid the lower #'s.

Oh btw, when you do install your new AGP card........read your mobo's manual! You might have to switch jumpers on the board letting it know to switch from onboard video to agp slot. You might also need to go into your BIOS and do the same.

GL.
