Just curiuos, what do you consider slow? I'm getting in the neighborhood of 550-700/kbs with mine. With windows it's a good day if I hit 300.

> With windows it's a good day if I hit 300.
When 100 megabit ethernet first started to become popular, I did some experimentation with our windows servers (win nt 4.0) and our unix servers (sun solaris 2.6 x86). Both OS were running on identical boxes with identical hardware plugged into the same cisco corebuilder router. Using a hardware packet analyzer, I watched the traffic go out across the network. The Solaris box could saturate the network utilization at around 94% of theoretical maximum. The Windows box chugged along at a nice and slow 36% at best with 22% to 24% being more typical.
When slugging a 3G data file around on the network, the difference between 94 mbps and 23 mbps is drastic. Granted, this was ten years ago, or so, but it doesn't seem to me that Microsloth has really upgraded their network code all that much. I seem to recall Bill Gates getting upset when somebody asked why Microsloth didn't include wintrumpet with their OS... his reply was along the lines that broadband would never become anything... that the future was in modems...

follow these instructions
Quote:
For some reason, the mozilla.com build of Firefox is significantly faster than the default Ubuntu one. Firefox 1.5 is even faster, and has many new features. These instructions lead you through installing Firefox 1.5 final, but should also work for 1.0.7 or any other version.

Was gonna make a whole thread about this, decided to throw it in here with the ubuntu question -- QDvdAuthor hasn't made a DVD yet..it crashes while creating the file, it flashes something over and over about skipping a sector, then does that until it stops itself.
I miss NeroVision What is the best Gnome Dvd Authoring program?

you want to open a terminal. it's been a long minute since i've seen a fresh install but it seems like they put a "quicklaunch" for it on the "taskbar". if not it is under the programs tree as terminal. You can edit the tree to add the option for a root terminal that asks for authentication then launches the terminal in root mode.

There's a French thing called Easy Ubuntu that might be useful for you. I used it the first time I installed ubuntu (only a few months ago). It's not perfect, but it works. Here it is.

although if you've installed the kde libraries, try out k3b
there are also command line tools (search google) that all the gui's utilize
