The last two I tried to make were covered in bacteria; I think it's the jars I used though honestly. They apparently aren't air tight. I went to shake one up yesterday and some liquid spilled from under the jar lid
They would have made good clones too. One was supposed to be albino golden teacher.

Stamets and workman both go with low sugar concentrations, what do you guys think about doing it that way?
I've got 6 lcs of agaricus I just started, starting at .1% and going up. They are all very clear after pcing.

I've never workaday out the percentages. I don't measure anything anymore. A drop of honey for about 400ml of water is what I use.

I think 1tbsp per 250ml comes out to near 6% honey(not .6% like I said originally-thanks muda). I just want to hear from someone who does .15 like stamets, not implying anything really. Guess I'll find out soon enough.

i'm sure i've done it about that low but like muda said it gets to a point where measuring doens't mean much lol, eventually what works fastest doesn't hold much weight when your in it for the long run anyway

1 table spoon per 250ml is 5.9% you jumped a decimal point there.

This is the first way I ever did bulk 4-5 years ago and it was so easy I barely measured anything and used a salsa jar lol.

I like little to zero sugars in my LCs, I use this tek for low carbs

thats why I use elme, extra light, skip the dextrose.
but yes, it has plenty on its own.

It's kind of trivial to mention this but I think LME actually has more sugar than regular ME. The lightness is due to it's being cooked less, which means it's sugars have not been subjected to as much heat which changes their chemistry (into something other than sugar) and gives them a darker appearance. Bodhi could probably chime in here and verify or refute what I'm saying but I think I'm right.

yep the lighter the malt extract the more sugar it has, not only that more of that sugar are the simple sugars too. darker malt extracts have less sugar and of their sugar more of them are longer chain.
the only reason we use ELME is for the color, I would think you would get much better performance from amber or dark malt extract anyway, it's got what our fungi want.

A tablespoon per 250ml is very heavy handed, these days i just put a drizzle of maple, and a sprinkle of raw sugar - probably less than a teaspoon, but i don't measure either.

they actually make rye malt extract I would be curious about how that works
malt extract has already been mashed so the enzymes have converted all starches to sugar. if you do an idodine test there's no starch left. the darker the extract the more complex sugars, cubes seem to be happier on more complex sugars than just dextrose/glucose provided by light malt. if you have brewers malt handy or happen to brew don't bother using extract just make the malt into agar without the mash step and I bet performance is even better leaving some of the starches in. that would be most similar to grain soak runoff agar which performs awesome
