I've had mixed results using this tek. Usually 1 out of 2 are bad, so I would make two jars up.
I've moved on to using the same formula in baby bottles in my pressure cooker and haven't had a bad lc since.
It's not a very reliable tek, but it did help me with understanding the process of making lc's.

That's a much better system. Also, ideally all cultures should start on agar, so you know they're clean. (...all of mine do, so you know, I do follow my own advice from time-to-time! )For those who don't mind taking a risk on a LC, this is a pretty good tek... albeit a very old one!
Yeah, the baby bottle method is solid, especially if using a spore syringe acquired from a reliable sponsor. That's as close to a sure thing without agar as there is!

I can't stress the importance of testing out LCs on agar.
It's not difficult, expensive, or scary!
Or, if that's still too much, at least do this.
This will save you SOOO much time. Even if your cultures are all nice and clean, it will get you started on a good habit that will rescue you from making jar after jar of funk in the future, without knowing where it came from.
There is no way to know if a culture is clean, unless you place it in 2 dimensions. Even if you get a culture to fruit, it still may have been contaminated the whole time. It's happened to me.

Hahahaha! Wow, that must've been left over from another thread I was responding to. I'll edit it.
...and, I'll post the CORRECT link here!
Hahaha. Here, enjoy a sexy shroom shot as a token of my apology:
Albino Penis Envy, 2nd flush:

...now back to your questions and comments!
Yes, I do believe you could steam sterilize the rice paste. I see no reason why not.
Hey, thanks for bringing that up! Now I can convince ANYONE who grows - even if it's just cakes without a PC! - to prove cultures with plates!
Yeah, go ahead! Try it out!
...come to think of it - I will try it out!
Do me a favor: shoot me a PM in a couple weeks. Make sure I don't forget. Hell, I'll probably make up a few 'rice plates' steam sterilized over this weekend!
Thanks for the inspiration! +5 to you, buddy!

EDIT_ you can probably steam sterilize the 'grocery store agar' as well. I'm not 100% confident on that one; maybe 85% confident. I'm over 95% confident on the rice paste, though.
...and I'm glad you appreciate the help.

I gotta think so....sub-optimal certainly.
What was the replacement sweetener added?
Xylitol is at least a natually occurring substance...
Sorry bro,

This TEK works great. I used it to make my first batches of LC. I had tried going straight from 2 different spore syringes to agar petri dishes and had no growth of any kind in two weeks.
So I made up three 1/2 pint jars of this tek and inoculated two of them from 2 different spore syringes and one culture syringe of Lentinula edodes (Shiitake). One week later all three look just like the image of the completed tek in the first post of this thread. I am about to transfer them to rye grain subs I made a few days ago.
I used plain old honey from Costco. I just bought some raw organic honey for the next go at this.
One of the jars has black specks in it because the spores came from an EarthsTongue.com "New Moon" type spore syringe, which is in a black liquid preservative of some kind. I can only hope that the black specks are entirely from the syringe and not from anything else. It appears so to me.
Thanks for the TEK. It's so simple and effective.

Anywhere from 70-80 is fine. The closer to 80 the faster the colonisation times...
Still to this day I've lost only one LC to this method, so happy it still helps people and -
