I am just days away from starting my journey with this hobby. I read all thru this and see that it says I dont need a pc. Do I not need to sterilize my substrate before injecting the lc. Im planning on doing BRF cakes.

Awesome thread, very helpful. I'm more interested in doing it "right" than doing it easy, but having it written out for a beginner this way makes it so much easier to understand the more advanced techniques.

Thanks, Otto.

yes you do, but you can just steam/boil them in a large covered pot (no PC) for 90min.

Of course!  If you're the least bit serious about this hobby you'll get and use a PC.

It's faster (30 min is plenty for 1/2 pints), it's more reliable (less contams), and it consumes less energy and water.

If you're boiling 90 min vs PCing for 30 min you'll save the cost of a cheap PC in a dozen runs or so just in power costs.

Its been 5 days and it is just flowing with myc. i believe it will be fully colonized by monday. I then plan to inoc some cakes. wish me luck and thanks for the easy tek otto.

I was just wondering if I could use the fluffy mycelium of a freshly birthed cake??? Would either stage matter as long as it's fresh, say second or third flush??

1) In the original tek posted you stated you do 1 tablespoon for every 250 ml. That's about 6%. Is that on the high end? If you had to give a range that'd be very acceptable - would you say 2-8%? so for 250 ml between 5 ml of honey to 20 ml of honey? Cause I hear a lot of people going towards 3%.

2) Also is it possible to this method but in a larger quantity and just multiply?

6% will work, but I would try to stay closer to 4%. I do 1 tablespoon per 350 ml. Im pretty sure you can go up to about 10% before the sugar levels are toxic for the mycelium.

yes! it sure is.

As everyone has said already, thanks so much for such an easy tutorial. Very keen to give it a try once I get back from holidays.

I think that I will try 3 different jars all up. One with flesh from my first fruits that have popped up in the past week (Cambodian), one with the Cambodian spores that are still in the syringe and another with the Hawaiian syringe which I haven't used yet.

Reason that I'm using the flesh for a jar as well as one with spores of the same strain is because the syringe is of the 'New Moon' variety that I purchased from ET (rookie mistake). For those that don't know, the solution in these syringes are black/purpleish colour. It would be hard to tell what's going on in my LC if there's all this black crap floating around too. I also didn't keep this syringe refrigerated after I first used it either, so don't know if it's any good at all.

Quick question - is there any need at all to give the LC a swirl every now and then after it's been sitting in the fridge for a few weeks after the myc has fully grown?

No.  You want to keep temp and DO levels down to limit metabolism during storage.
