Has anyone tried dirt?

I've got some jars on the go and was talking to a friend that breaks up his cakes and then covers them with dirt. He has had some great success and was wondering if anyone else had tried this. If so, should I heat the dirt to kill bacteria? Cover the bottom of the tray with verm, then cakes, then dirt? Any feedback would be great.

50/50 soil and verm works well. Sterilize it.

Dirt or soil as it is more commonly known, does not have to be sterilized...but it would not hurt. It is pretty resistant to having most of the nasty contams under control, but if you want you could nuke it for a bit in the microwave first...just my two cents.
