The BIG mist (automated)

A digital timer clicks on, an electric pump begins silently humming.
Immediately a micron fine mist of UV sterilized water vapor

appears out of the nozzles located overhead.
Light air currents from a low speed wall mounted oscillating fan slowly swirls the mist around the room.
After a minute the pump, mist nozzles & fan shuts off.
The fog lingers.

couldnt you accomplish the same thing with just the water pump going to some nice 1 micron nozzles? i guess the water wouldnt be UV sterilized, but thats easy to take care of.
how much does that UV piece cost?

I wonder if the UV radiation has any effect on mushroom growth, such as mutations. I know that when using one of these things with a fish tank such as one with corals and little critters in it the radiation can have negative effects.

No ive never thought of such a thing...
The set ups ive studied and contemplated are much better for long term humidification and air circulation for grow rooms.

The sterilizer is a 36 watt UV sterilizer (turbo twist design) meant for sterilizing water in large high end closed system aquariums ($150).
Industrial & commercial type UV systems have been both World Health Organization & UL approved for sterilizing water, for decades.
The nozzle is simply a pressure misting nozzle, commonplace in many applications (auto-mist in retail produce stores - for instance) & costs about $15 each.
The pump is a magnetic drive pump, commonly used industrially, in chemical fluid transfer. Other applications include high end aquarium use ($150 - 200).
I just happen to have sterilizers & pumps of this type on hand, as I also breed & raise discus as a hobby.

Water purity is critical to successful discus breeding & rearing. Discus are so sensitive, small parts per million in impurities can cause sickness, infertility & sometimes death.
I would not expose hundreds of discus worth $50 to $200 apiece to anything harmful.
So, I was just tinkering with things on hand.
My intent was only to point out a misting / humidifying system, that is applicable to large scale type cultivation (of any type).
This system, in conjunction with a humidistat is fully automated, very effective, almost maintenance free (clean the nozzles weekly & fill a reservoir - as needed) & fool proof.

In this system, Nothing is exposed to UV light, except the water & that is through glass, in a completely enclosed system.
I would wager, world wide, in excess of 3 billion dollars worth of tropical aquarium fish currently live in UV light sterilized water. If it was not safe, the fact above makes no sense.
And, hell no. You don't expose aquarium coral, or anything living organism to high intensity UV light. Unless your intent - is to damage, or kill it. That includes humans, too.

I'd suggest having a pump that cycles the resevoir water through the UV aparatus, over and over, filling into itself. I think this would provide better sterilization, as I imagine in aquariums, the water does just that: cycles past the light over and over.. probably several times an hour. I can't see water becoming sterilized with a single pass through a device like this.. but I can see it greatly reducing organisms if the water was passed through it regularly.

Only a tiny % of the water goes out the nozzles. What doesn't, is recirculated, time & time again through the UV sterilizer.

Mistymates produce a finer mist then any I have found in stores (tried many different brands)...it is a micron sized mist like the nozzle in this first post seems to produce. I absolutly love it and have thought of this before..they have these setup at the grocery store misting the fresh veggies every so often..like a bunch of automated mistymates in your closet...

A word to those that don't know these misters won't produce this fine mist if the pumps don't put out the psi recommended usually 40-60 psi. Just something to keep in mind before buying your pumps. I have played for years with pumps and sprayers and misters in aeroponics and these setups are the shit without a doubt! Foggers are also great alternative and cheaper too. Onward thru the fog!

True dat You have to have a pump that puts of PSI in the range the nozzles spec's call for.

This was one of the first things I noticed, these ultra fine misters at 40psi puts out a very nice fine mist but bump that psi up to 60psi and you got yourself some thick ass fog!

You think a RV water pump will work? Thats all I can find in the 40-60 psi range.
