    #5235932 - 01/28/06 05:18 PM (18 years, 3 months ago)

Antivirus is a good idea: get F-Prot from F-Secure.
It's free.

which build are you using ?
because if you arent using Ubuntu you have missed out.
anyway from what i hear there are not many viruses for Linux , and spyware virtually doesnt exsist. although it would probably be a good idea to get some sort of protection anyway.

When I try to open it, it says, "archive type not supported"?

I don't know if ubuntu will work with the debian package but you can try that anyways

just sudo dpkg -i packagename.deb

ortherwise just tar -xzvg sourcefile.tgz and then install it.

do not try to use debian packages on ubuntu. if you want f-prot on ubuntu, 'sudo apt-get install f-prot-installer'.

there's really no need to anti-malware on linux.

You might try AVG free. I think it works on Linux. Don't hold me to that, I haven't switched over yet. Windows brainwashing hasn't fully worn off yet. But I take the plunge into Redhat with my next computer.

Oh, wait. I found the link to a Linux download. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5

yup. you really dont need anything unless you're running an email server or something (which you're not). linux is secure.

If anything, you should be behind a router firewall. And if you dont have one of these, a) get one b) set up smoothwall or m0n0wall on an old, networked computer c) install firestarter .

Actually, if you only use your computer for desktop purposes, you dont even need a firewall. Ubuntu is secure enough. That is one advantage of linux over windows - you typically dont need to worry about viruses, trojans, spyware, rootkits, or firewalls.

ubuntu is built off debian, and will always work with dpkg type things.

as per spyware, etc - no worries on linux. if you run a server, set up some security, otherwise no problems...
