stalled jars
    #5235050 - 01/28/06 11:58 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

My jars havent shown any new growth for about 4 days now, and it doesnt look like a bright white coating like the other jars, just white knots and ties between various grains

Ive been incubating at 80 degrees, but just turned off the heater today to see if i can spur some growth.

Does it look too dry?

Thier are sometimes beads of water on the sides of the jar at the top.

Man 4 days is too soon. I?ve seen they germinate after a week or more... it depends. Remember patience is the key to this hobbie.
Your temp is ok, don?t turn it off.

And... those pics are huge! Just because i went to the door but otherwise i wouldn?t mind looking at your post just because how much they take too load (yes, slow conection :frown: ), so do a little photoshop or something before uploading .

Good luck

Its been 21 days, not 4.

Thier has been no notable improvment in the last week, it seems thier is just white clumps here and there.

Would using a more humid heat be better?

Keep that temp up 84-86F. afew degrees is all it takes sometimes. Also I'll reiterate What do u have for gas xchange exactly?

Looks like he replaced the lid with a Tyvek filter, or else he's got the lid underneath the filter.

I tried replacing my lids with Tyvek before and the grains dried out quickly.

If you have a lid under the filter, you don't have any gas exchange and that will stall growth too.

Oh, then again, that could just be a flipped lid. In that case, all it looks like is 3 bandaids covering the inoculation holes.

Looks like it could be anything actually (FAE) At that stage though I'm leaning towards not shaking the syringe before inoculating as well as temp is on the low side or in worst case contams.

Yeah I cleaned my room up a bit, jars are going along a wee bit better.
They have the Tyvek inserts, but thier still is a metal lid underneath, with small, 1/3 inch holes cut in the metal at 3 places for inoculation. I then covered the innolculation holes with band-aids so it can breath a little bit. I think what I did was fine, it was just the size of the jar and the strain (PF Classic). Ill upload some new pics in a second.

Do you think it is OK to flip the jar upside down for a day or so?

Wouldnt that cause a buildup of gas up top?

Could i just spawn right now, and get rid of the grain sittin at the bottom(top) of the jar (not really colonized at all, my top layer never colonized correctly)

I don't know if it's me but that jar looks fine
you can turn it over, once in a while, BTW, are you shaking it every other day?
Maybe all it needs is a little more time, one of my first BRF jars took over a month to completely colonize, while her sisters took a little less than 2 weeks.

I agree it looks as it should (fine) but don't shake every other day that will only retard things. You only want to shake vigorously immediately after inoculating again once there is noticeable growth 25-30% and if you want again at 50% but that is really unnecessary. I myself only shake once after 25-30% and thats at full colonization just to double check for how fast and strong the myc comes back this also shows if there are any hidden contams as recovery will be noticeably slower. Patience is a virtue!

My bad! he's right, only shake at 25-30% and then 50%

This jar is done, its completly BONE DRY. I have to start a new and mixed what was colonized in there with some compost just to see what happens.

maybe next time you should try this EVERYSTEP

Soak wbs for 18hrs
drain
rinse for 2min
simmer (ON LOW) for 20min (NO MORE!)
drain
rinse for 2min
let dry for no less than 4hrs (6-8 is optimal)
load to jars 2/3 of the way full
wipe down all exposed glass around where the band is going to be with a dry paper towel
place a single sqaure of tyvek on top
then the lid with 3 1/4" holes equally spaced and filled with poly-fil
polyfil should be about 2.5 times as compressed in hole as it is in its normal state
wrap with tinfoil as tight as you can 1/2 of the way down the jar and make sure there are no holes
PC at 15PSI for 70min
let cool/remove foil/innoc BE STERILE! nuke the F&*K out of the room with oust, be sure to turn off all fans/AC/heat use an alcohol soaked paper towel for your needle inbetween holes (1/2cc in 2 of the 3 holes in each jar)
place double layered coffee filters on top w/ rubberband
shake to distribute spores
incubate between 84-86f no less, no more, DONT LET YOUR TEMPS VARY! (suggestion - move IC away from all your outer walls)
fan incubation chamber twice per day
shake at 30%

follow every step and you'll have that problem fixed

GL to ya and happy trails

These jars were pre-sterilized and ready to go from http://www.mushbox.com

I think they dried out on my because thier was too much air moving around the jars, and they got very dry. I think i overincubated for a long time too, and thier was barely any moisture content, so im trying to spawn now, maybe thier grab hold in the nutritius, moist dirt.
