Casing vs. Cake Cultivation
    #523367 - 01/17/02 09:00 AM (22 years, 2 months ago)

I'm researching which method I want to use for my first foray into cultivation. What are the adv. vs. disadv. of each. Grazie in advance.

I suggest you case your cakes. Start out with a simple damp verm casing. Then, when you become more experienced, branch out to some better casing methods involving peat moss, etc.

i definitely suggest using a cake method for your first time. casing can be a little, or a lot, tricky. cake methods, such as the world-reknown PF Tek (www.lilshopofspores.com) are pretty straightforward and easy, as long as you know how to follow directions. after you have success, then move on to other teks, there's a billion of em. have fun, hope this helped.
peace,
raj

my wookie friend says once you've got the cakes growing right you should use about 1/3 as cakes, another 1/3 as casing and another 1/3 for spawning. (cakes yield less and dry out more in my wookies opinion)

It's none of my business what you do because I m new also but if I may. I would suggest the MEB bags from Sporeworks.
I think a little success the first time is important also. You can read about them at www.sporeworks.com

so are casing methods!  check out --> Casing for Dummies (Hongus verm only method) <--.  it's simple enough that if you're careful you'll get a nice yield, plus i just like the way a little forest of shrooms looks

The only limitation to growing either way, is the ability to keep out contaminants. Casings require an increased awareness of sterility, lots of room for fucking up. Once they are established and free of contaminants, they are much better then cakes.
Casings require completely clean cakes or colonized substrate. They require you to break up the substrate to lay in trays. They require a casing layer, usually. All of your utensils, trays, substrate, casing soil, have to be free of contaminants. More steps involved, more room for error.
If you went through the process of making PF tek cakes, you might as well continue with the process, and fruit them as cakes. If you are using PF tek, you probably don't have a Pressure cooker, and you cannot be as confident that you have contaminant free cakes, or that you can produce contaminant free casing soil.
Stick with the cakes, and the PF Tek. If you enjoy this hobby, GET A PRESSURE COOKER, spend the 150 bucks and get a good one. Don't get a 4 or 6 quart. Get a 22+ quart.

Because your Cake is nice and white and pretty, doesn't mean there is zero contaminant present. If anything is in there, it will express itself when you break up the cake, to case.

Sterility may be required for spawn creation. But it is not required for casing. Casing need only be pasteurized, and sometimes with coir you need nothing at all. Od course, this does not mean do it with dirty hands etc. You still need to maintain relatively sanitary conditions.

okay so how do you pasteurize your casing material. can you just stick it in the oven for awhile. would you still need to pasteurize if you opened a fresh bag of vermiculite.

hey, dont get me wrong but i've heard of a LOT of people that case with _non_sterilized_verm_.
but my wookie friend favourite way to case/spawn is the good old way that Mr. Pasteur has invented... he's magic, believe me.

I use Peat:Perlite casings. In my experience, PEAT is best sterilized. I don't use vermiculite in anything. Coir looks interesting, but the only place I can get it locally, I DON"T GO TO. I live in MIAMI, the last thing I need is some COP thinking I grow POT, and finding SHROOMS.
