which is the best media player for linux, the one that Ubuntu came with will not play my media. Ive searched around and read a little about MPlayer, is it the best? Also, how would i go about installing it, im trying to get linux to be my main operating system, but i will still need windows for games .....anyway, ive got it to read my second harddrive for the media and download files so far, took me a minute to figure out, but i got it.
also, are there any other interesting programs that i should get for my linux, interesting/fun/free/usefull programs.
thanks guys

Amarok is God. It uses a relational database to keep track of music. It handles huge amounts of songs and it lightening quick.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats this website will help you get every format you miss back up and running...
install VLC media player for video, once you install the mp3 codecs you can use pretty much any audio program
oh and to get to root, type
sudo -s
then it will say password:
type your login password..

you need to install all of the codecs before anything will play. follow this guide, and you'll be all set:
Quote:
1. install various codecs from repositories
* sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-plugins * sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-lame * sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-ffmpeg * sudo apt-get install lame * sudo apt-get install sox * sudo apt-get install ffmpeg * sudo apt-get install mjpegtools * sudo apt-get install vorbis-tools * sudo apt-get install flac
2. then download and install w32 codec and libdvdcss2
* sudo dpkg -i w32codecs_20050412-0unofficialubuntu2_i386.deb * sudo dpkg -i libdvdcss2_1.2.8-1unofficialubuntu3_i386.deb
3. REGISTER codecs with the command
* gst-register-0.8
4. Get and install xine (or gxine - what I prefer on gnome)
* sudo apt-get install gxine
I recommend gxine for a video player...and I use beep media player for music.
download the w32 codecs & libdvdcss2 here
oh...and before you do any of this...you need to add to your sources.list. here is an excellent guide: http://www.psychocats.net/linux/sources.php

automix is good, but you really should learn to do all that stuff by hand...it is not difficult whatsoever. by knowing your way around the terminal to do basic stuff will really pay off...with automix, you learn nothing.

yeah, i got it installed, which was just like installing lots of other things. I am used to Unix a little, i program in C++ a lot in the unix environment at school, and it is command based, i am catching on better now, now if only more games were easily ran i would kick windows off my hdd.

ok, got some more questions, everytime i boot into windows to go and play a game, and the reboot back into linux, all of my settings will be gone, wtf, i will even lose files i downloaded, like wallpapers, the files i make on the desktop to go directly to my second harddrive will still be there, but they will be empty until i set them up again in the disk manager.
thanks for the help again
