% Percentage of Lime ?
    #523100 - 01/17/02 01:29 AM (22 years, 10 months ago)

From TMC page 132: Paul says to use 4 parts course peat to 1 part limestone flour+1/2 part limestone grit. If we round it off, it is 4 to 1. He says this is for agarics and can be used for most mushies. Question: It seems that 25% lime is a lot. Shroomgod in one old report uses like 10% for some cased straw. Now obviously Paul is the man and knows best. Still I cant help wonder. What is the best amount of this (buffering) lime to use in a mostly peat casing? Thank you for your input.

The best? Who can say. I use a heaping tablespoon full per meatloaf sized casing. Seems to work well. Just be sure it's hydrated lime.

I use 5% limestone by volume and the equal part of oyster shells.

Yes Anno, that is what I thought was more accurate. Have had success before with your amount. So Im wondering why Paul says to use such a large amount. I followed his recipe this time and hope its not too much powdered oyster shell (very finely ground) It might throw off the pH and make an unsupportive medium for primordia. Anyone have any more opinions?
