Configuring linux webserver to use simultaneous connection streams - Please Help! *Update*
    #5230791 - 01/27/06 11:53 AM (18 years, 3 months ago)

Hey,

because of the restrictions on my local university network, some friends of mine have rented a server, and set up an SSH tunnel to it using OpenVPN. Basically, they have the privacy of a virtual private connection, open to the internet. However, the local network here restricts each tcp/ip stream to 30kB/s up and down. So, when not using the SSH tunnel, downloading a file from a fast server will download at 30kB/s, unless you use a download manager to download using 10 streams at once, in which case it downloads at 300kB/s. However, when using the SSH tunnel, all the tcp/ip streams are wrapped inside a single SSH-ed stream, so the entire connection has a maximum upload/download speed of 30kb/s. Even if you're connecting to 16 different websites, it appears as one single stream to the local network server, so it's restricted to 30kB. As you can imagine, this gets really slow :sad:

So - is it possible to configure the linux-based SSH server to connect to each computer on the local network using a large number of streams, configured to appear as one connection to the outside internet (i.e using one external IP and one external stream for the internet)

Basically, something like this;

Code:

-------->
-------->
local computer --------> linux server --------> internet
-------->
-------->

is this possible?

Thank you :laugh:

Hey,

I haven't found any way to do this server-side, but I did realise that if the server is configured to accecpt connections on multiple ports, OpenVPN can support multiple connections using virtual TAP adapters, that appear as internet connections to Windows.

SO is there any software solution that allows load balancing of multiple internet connections (ideally more than two, but two would be ok) so that protocols like bittorrent can use the extra bandwidth?

Many thanks everyone, and please help :laugh:
