Hello Again Folks!
"Shy Violet" is getting ready to start the growing project. She's wondering about the possibility of using an oven to sterilize the substrate-filled jars. She has read about boiling them (doesn't have a pressure cooker, too much money!), but not about putting the jars in the oven. Can it be done, is it safe, and does it work? She was thinking about buying pre-sterilized filled jars, but it's a lot of money and if this method will work to sterilize, it could be a huge plus! Any suggestions?

I guess i am just stupid and foolish to even contemplate the idea. Pikalo, you were right. Nobody wants to share with a newbie, i have to tough it out alone. Thanks for your help.

It seems that an oven should work just fine so long as you are careful not to dry the jars out. Personally i have always boiled my jars with a lid over the pot and the jar lids loose so that the steam will permiate the jars. I have found that an hour at a slow boil being careful not to let water splash into the jars is plenty. Out of 48 jars I have on average 1 contaminated jar. Sorry no one else would help you. There are some snobby people in here who are often too good to lend even the slightest help. I hope this works well for you.

You can presterilize you substrate in the oven
seperately before you mix it.(300deg/20min) If
you put prefilled jars in the oven it will cook the
moisture out of them. Presterlizing is highly
reccomended to those who only boil their jars
and don't have a PC. I presterlize and PC. If you'll
watch ebay you canget a killer deal on a PC. The
cost of prefilled jarsmight pay for one. Got mine
for $3.75! Or one of these guys round the shroomery
might give you a deal on some prefilled jars. Considered
mycobags? They may be your answer. Do a search
on "mycobags" and read workmans' post. Hope that

Hey, let me know how everything turns out . . . I was wondering the same thing. I'm a newbie w/out a PC . . . I think I'll try the boiling method mentioned.

my wookie friend has a PC but he has already used with success the microwave (about 5-7 mins on max) or boiled the jars in a big pan with lid to accumulate vapour...
