I inocculated pint jars of a 2/3 cup bs 1/3 cup water micture with EQ about 2 weeks ago and there is basicly no colonization growth at all. Do you think I used to little water? That's the only reason I can think of of why it might fail. Also I used micron magik filters, do you think too much water evaporated out of the filters? Or should it work with the filters?

I use 100 ml water and 150 ml seed per pint jar, which is more water than you use.

hmm, how humid is the area you had the jars in? It's possible that filter discs could let a bit too much water evaporate if the jars aren't stored somewhere with high humidity, but I've never tried them so I dunno. Polyfill has worked well for me in the past.

Anno do you use lids or filters? I'm thinking that filters might be unnessacary and they're just adding another thing that could go wrong.

Odds are you lost most of your moisture through the filter disks. My advice to you is, don't use the filter disks. Steep the birdseed for 45 minutes, then load into your jars, then add a vermiculite seal ala PF tech. It works great. Everytime I have used the filter disks my substrate either drys out completely or contaminates. But I've never run into a problem with the verm seal, as long as you use a fine grade verm.

I had trouble with the filter discs too, but I think they would have worked well if I had placed the jars in one of my fruiting terrariums, allowing them some humidity. I stuck them in my cupboard over the stove right by the air vent (warmest spot in my block house during winter), and my cakes did dry out before they colonized. I was able to save about half of the jars by shooting sterile water into the inner reservoir, through the disc. Plan to use the discs again this weekend, and try colonozing in a terrarium placed in the dark.
