Modem Clarification V.92
    #5224374 - 01/26/06 12:22 AM (18 years, 3 months ago)

OK I really don't understand computer hardware for shit.

I want to get a modem where I can answer incoming call waiting calls - does any V.92 modem do this or do you need a certain brand? I've done some googling and I'm confused.

Has anyone had good luck with this? It is cheaper than paying for an extra line every month.

Yes, a full hardware modem with voice capability is what you need. :yesnod:

Correct. Avoid a "Win modem" like the plaque. They are a few dollars cheaper, but they suck. The problem is they saved money by removing some of the electronics from the modem itself and implementing their functions in software. In other words, your computer does more work and modem less work, making the modem a bit cheaper to produce. The problem is that if you are online using the modem, and trying to do something computational intensive at the same time, such as ripping movies or music, then the modem will slow down or hang up on you.

Also, because it is a windows thing, they only work with Microshit's Winblows... (unless somebody in the free unix world has reversed engineered a driver... which would be a complete waste of time in my book...)

Thanks guys, you can explain it better than PC magazine articles and all that crap I found.

I am running windows and think this sounds like a good idea (even though it is old) and it looks like it does no good unless the ISP is using V.92 also.

How does this one look....

Thanks again.
