Sure, skip the dual boot XP part...

It has been a while since I played with this sort of thing.  If I remember correctly, I made a small (the smallest I could) partition at the start of the disk.  (Be sure this is the first partition on the disk!)  Format this partition as a FAT32 file system and make sure it is active.  Now create two additional partitions, one for XP and one for linux.  The linux boot files, lilo, etc will all go into the small FAT32 partition.

Won't that delete the XP boot files?

what linux distro are you installing?

i dont know about XP, but 2000 made me install it on the first partition.
the boot files can be located in the next partition, it can be its own /boot partition
or you can just make the next partition your root, /
i was just lazy and made it my root, there are reasons for and against this, for just a home desktop comp. it don't think it really matters.
I would definitly suggest putting /home on a seperate partition.

I always just installed the boot loader to the MBR, ive only used GRUB
it is possible to install it to one of your partitions, though i beleive it has to be close to the begining of the disk

here is my layout

/dev/hda1 * 1 18281 9213246 7 HPFS/NTFS Windows 2000
/dev/hda2 18281 24098 2931862+ 83 Linux -Debian root
/dev/hda5 24098 25453 682731 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/hda6 25453 27391 976720+ 83 Linux -Debian /home
/dev/hda7 27391 36110 4394344+ 83 Linux -Gentoo root
/dev/hda8 36110 38792 1352106 83 Linux -Gentoo /home

i never was sure why it skips from 2 to 5, thats just how the debian install disk does it.

here is some good documentation

did you limit the amount of disk space Xp could use durring the install?
did it use your whole disk?

I gave XP 6 gigs for the boot files. Then I have d: for the rest of the disk. I have tried using the Partition Magic wizard for installing another OS, following all the directions. But when it puts the linux files in the beginning of the disk, it makes XP unbootable. I dont know, I guess I have to do some more reading. Thanx for the replies guys. oh yeah, its gnome I believe. The disk is a Red Hat disk from my school text book.

Would it be easier to install Linux first, then install XP? The only problem is I have a Dell, so alot of the drivers are bundled in the XP install disk.

Yes, but I assumed (bad me!) that he was installing all from scratch. As I said, it has been a while since I have done this... back then, it was win2k.

the easiest way to go is to install windows first.
i believe that windows will over write your linux partitions.

XP will let you choose how much disk space you want to use correct?

if so just install Xp, give it half your disk, or whatever you want.
then use your linux install disk to partition the rest of the drive how you want, and install linux.

install windows first...and limit the size of the windows partition during installation.

and once you have windows set up, install linux into the remaining space.

here are some instructions for dualbooting windows/ubuntu:

yeah, like I said in your other thread, partition magic is garbage. avoid it. I also recommend installing another linux distro...the disc you have is probably out-of-date. just install ubuntu.
