First of all, can I ask you a question? After reading your profile I must ask this:

Do you really do a lot of surfing and lying on the beach in Alaska? (lol!)

To answer your question, I think that straw is better than casing. Granted, casing can produce some damm good results. But, for a newbie, try straw first. Then later, if you like, try casing trays. (straw teks are a little eaiser than casings)

yeah we got huge surf here! naaah i just put that stuf in to be a smart ass.
I have been doing the casings,i think they are pretty easy, ive read the straw teks and they sound kinda complicated, but i dont mind complicated as long as the end result is better.

actually we do have big surf here but not to many surf it. deffnitely not me :)

Lo
The point with straw is to prepare it well.
But it is not very complicated.
What i do is:
i boil water in a big pot
then i let cool down for few minutes
i put chopped straw in pot, cover with a jar to keep the straw underwater
I cover the pot and let sit for 30 minutes giving a little fire after 20 mins.
Then let cool in clean place.
So far i had good results as i dont have a thermometer to reach the perfect 70?c for pasteurizing.
But i get better results with mixed straw/dung.
The mycellium colonize the whole faster than straw alone.

You'll get better results than casing alone cause you add lot more nutritive stuff (straw/dung...).
