sterility?
    #521671 - 01/15/02 08:40 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

just a question (hopefully hasnt been asked a million times) but it doesnt seem like mushrooms grow in very sterlie conditions, yet, to grow them on anything but brf and verm you have to be EXTREMELY sterile, why is that?

BRF, relative to substrates in the wild, such as lignin-rich mulch and dung, is like concentrated nutrients. This is why you must sterilize it because everything wants to colonize highly nutritious substrates. Also, you don't have as much air exchange as the great outdoors. HIgh CO2 encourages the growth of many bacteria and lower fungi.

Yes you're right mushrooms grow in all kinds of nasty places on their own. From dung to dead animals. Yet when cultivating them yourself why does one have to be so "sterile"? Basically you are creating an ideal environment (moisture , food source) for mushrooms to grow. In doing so you are also creating an ideal environment for competitors and contaminants to grow. Though this may be an ideal environment it is not a natural environment - it is an environment specifically created to hasten growth. Unfortunately, this environment happens to be perfect for speeding up the growth of not only fungus but mold and bacteria which is why it is important to STERILIZE everything. Sterilizing kills the nasties leaving a nice clean environment for your fungus.
