Great San Pedro Find
    #5209380 - 01/22/06 08:14 AM (18 years, 2 months ago)

My wife and I were in Home Depot last night where I found 18 3-6" San Pedros clustered in one pot for $7.00. My wife couldn't understand my excitement. I'm splitting them up and putting them inseperate contaners. Keep on searching!

Yeah, towards the end of last year there was a surge of target finds. Usually huge ones for very cheap.

I have not yet found any san pedro in any garden stores in my area... do you think asking them if they can make a special order for san pedro would be suspicious?

Hey man, i really recommend you keep at least some of the clusters and not split em up. I mean you can repot them, but keep them in clusters, i've found they grow really good like that, and what a sight to see after 5+ years!

Your local store doesn't usually know what the hell a san pedro is. Most larger chains just have "Cactus" on the sticker anyway. But if they do have the genus/species... go ahead and ask for one by that name. I doubt it'd raise any eyebrows if they carry it in the first place.

I reckon splitting them up is a good idea. Sure they might grow 'good' as a cluster, but much better individually. And besides, in a few years each one will grow some branches anyway.

I agree with you aswell, they'll probably grow better alone, but i guess i'm just soft for huge clusters of pedro, hahaha.

If you put them all in the same pot they grow faster.

Any somewhat scientific reasoning for this?

Hmm I wouldn't think so. From my experience I have noticed that cacti greatly slow down their growth when they become rootbound, i.e. run out of root space. If you were to plant multiple cacti in a single pot, you would also have to multiply the volume of the pot to cater to that number of cacti. But the main problem I can see for this is when it comes to repotting time, which for most cacti gardeners is done every year or two, the roots would be severely intertwined and you would cause a lot of damage trying to seperate them.

Most cacti I've seen grown in the same pot together have been thin and not particularly vigorous compared to ones from the same clone planted alone. You also run into problems with the spines of one cactus scratching the skin of the other leaving scabbed scars.
