Videos of High Voltage

Found a few videos I had laying around of some high-voltage accidents, figured I would share them in case anyone is interested (and why wouldn't you be, really!).
This first one is of a transformer substation where a ground arc has started on the low-voltage side. For whatever reason, the line stays energized and no breakers open up. The coils inside the transformer heat up and begin to boil the insulating oil, at which point pressure-relief valves open to let out the oil in a large nicely explosive cloud. Of course it lights on fire in a spectacular fireball! The entire transformer casing cracks open and spills the rest of the oil onto the ground.
The bang you see just as the fireball starts is a fuse on the HV side going off to shut down power to the station.

This is a short video of a switch failing on a 345,000 volt transmission line. This type of switch is called an "airbrake", I think.

Last one I have, and my personal favorite:
This is another switch failure, this time on a 500,000 volt transmission line. As with the last one, the airbrake switches try to open but fail to shut off the current (though only one phase of three fails on this one). What occurs next is why it's my favorite: an INCREDIBLY huge jacob's ladder forms, stretching easily to a hundred feet or so before the power company manually trips the line to prevent any further damage.
Truly awesome.

Good stuff
I worked for a power company for a few years doing engineering and automation and we watched that third one (the engineering staff) with our mouths wide open... 500kV is not something i'd really want to get close to...
I heard a lot of stories from linemen who would find polemounted transformers (buckets) that were malfunctioning and were literally boiling the oil in them- pretty dangerous even just at 20kva.

Its interesting that such a powerful discharge still rises upwards.

Well any arc that lasts more than a second should begin to move upwards because the arc is EXTREMELY hot (surface of the sun kind of hot) and heat rises. Some arcs won't rise too much before they become too long.
I guess 500kV can stretch out pretty far

I'm in an electrician's training program. We have watched several videos that starred people who were in horrific electrical accidents. We've seen dudes with no hands, discolored skin, and other stuff.

Yeah I've seen enough of those videos and even talked to one or two such victims when I was younger (I think my parents were terrified of me trying something stupid, lol).
Electricity is cool - really cool - but it also demands respect and constant attention if you plan on keeping all your limbs and life

really cool shit but very dangerous. i watched a kid die for two years from the injuries he sustained hiding in an on the ground transformer box the city forgot to lock. ironically he was hiding from him mom who didn't like to let him go outside b/c she was scared something might happen to him.

I was fixing a washing machine once and got electricuted. That was not fun.
That first video looks like an expensive accident, unless it was staged.
