Spore bombardment of manure
    #5213059 - 01/23/06 02:39 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I got some commercial farmyard manure to try out (nicked a handful from a split bag in the garden centre!). I had an old dried up mini substrate that was just 20g of wheat. It was totally covered in spores, I let all the shrooms drop all over it. I mixed it up with a small amount of the manure, no pasturization, it was already prewetted. The hope is that the manure will be overcome by the millions of spores and contams wont take hold, then I can mix with more of the manure.
Worth a try for free anyway.

Hello, newbie member here

I'd be very interested if you kept us updated regarding this "Tek".
Essentially I did the same thing - made up a compost pile (outdoors) of cow manure and pea-straw and poured an entire prints worth of "spore water" into the pile (print was Cubenesis "Golden Tops").

Did I just waste the print or is this a legitimate technique?
(I'm really not sure, but I figure this is how it works in the wild?)

IME, I find that spores don't seem to take hold in manure alone, but my experience has only been with spawn bags and jars containing manure. I've found that mixing the manure with whole grains seems to really help out. If you're using just manure, I would try to inoculate with grain spawn or a liquid culture.

I think HippieChick did a grow with just poo inoculated with spores. I don't remember if she mixed in whole grains or not. She may have inoculated with an LC and not spores. Either way, she said it worked for her.

Blackout- You could probably get a great deal on a busted bag of poo. Ask the manager in the garden center how much he'd sell it for. I'm sure the price would be next to nothing.

This is what I heard too. I am just trying to replicate what happens in the wild. If you think about it there are about 10prints going in this small amount, about a 1/2cup or less. Thats up to about 1,000 vendor syringes! should increase my chances a bit.

Lots of the bags are busted, they do tape them up and knock a few ? off. When I was young we used to buy homebrew kits that come in big tins, if the tins were dented they sold them 1/2 price, my mate used to dent the cans he wanted, then come back next week and get them 1/2 price!

Is this the manure you used? I've been meaning to try out this stuff and
am interested to see if it works.

Thats the exact same shit, literally! I have a pdf on the contents
http://www.gardenhealth.com/msds/universal/farmyardmanure.pdf
ph 6-7 so could possibly do with some lime. Have you ever found normal lime in dublin, not hydrated lime?

I've never found lime in Dublin, had to order it online. This is the only manure I've ever found too.

There is another dublin member here called thelegend who got horse shit from a proper stables. He has plenty to trade. I got cow manure up the mountains, but horse is meant to be the best. I went into a field with horses but found none. Might try a riding school.

The lime pissed me off, you go into woodies or atlantic and they may have 4 brands, all hydrated. All the pet shops only had tiny amounts.

Yes I have been to several Garden Centers asking for Horticulural lime but they didn't seem to know what I meant, I thought it was strange. I'm
wary of using hydrated lime.

Interesting...it seems that only about 4 months ago I was harshly ridiculed for a very similar idea....

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/4518659/page/0/fpart/1/vc/1

I thought it made sense then, and from what I've seen and experienced it stands to reason that it will work to some extent.

Regardless of the criticism, I ultimately tried this also with my spent poo casings and spent cakes....

Wasnt too harsh. They were more likely just stopping you wasting your money on a syringe. I do not have much hope for mine even though I am using a massive amount of spores compared to a single syringe. I am also using a tiny amount of manure, so it is probably literally 100,000 more spores to manure than what you were suggesting. I am also incubating mine.
The cakes is a good idea, I hope it works out for you.

Actually Coda, I would disagree...

This thread: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5214368/an/0/page/2
... would make me think it will work, no?

inoculation of straight poo seems to be fine, or am I confused as to what was done?

If it does work it will take a very long time for the Myc to colonize. Thats why people use spawn. It's to quicken colonization and gives the myc a chance to establish in a sterile environment.

yah, if you prepared a STERILE jar with a PROPER tek and PROCEDURE, then yes it has a fighting chance.

Lets look at all the things that will lead to failure in this grow.

1.) Dirty spores
2.) Dirty substrate
3.) Dirty spawn

nothing was prepared, he's just hoping to mix all this stuff together and have it work. There's the off chance it might colonize, but, thats a small possibility. Most likely this is gonna end up as one giant contam.

Coda/Sithetic,

My apologies if I caused offense, I wasn't questioning your advice, just trying to clarify my own knowledge. I've found very little info on colonizing straight poo from spores, however from all I have read on the topic, it's quite possible.

I know from experience if I dump spores onto my compost pile(s) within 4 weeks (under right conditions) I will have fruits popping through the "casing" layer of soil on the top of the heaps. I've only cultivated food mushrooms this way thus far, but I'm interested in seeing what will happen with the PsiloCybe print I've just used.

No-one else cultivates mushies on an outdoor compost heap? - Indoor cultivation doesn't interest me that much... cupboards are already full with my Cacti, Acacias and MJ plants

Still no action. Next flush I get I will try making up a PF jar with about 10 unsterile prints. Just mix it up with BRF and verm and see what happens.
