Need new firewall...having problems
    #5210302 - 01/22/06 01:15 PM (18 years, 3 months ago)

I'm having problems with Sygate Personal Firewall. It was functioning fine before, but now part of it keeps crashing when it loads, and it's affecting DrWatson too. This started happening after I tried to upgrade to WinXP SP2.

Something happened during the initial installation of SP2, so I removed and reinstalled SP2, like my comp told me. Then I started having problems with my firewall, so I removed and reinstalled that too, but nothing got fixed. I think it might be a registry problem, but I really have no clue.

I was wondering if someone could tell me what is the best way to fix these problems? I need to know what(if anything) I need to do to my registry, and also reccommendations for a new firewall.

Have a crappy old computer in a closet somewhere? Dust it off and put Smoothwall on it. I have it on a pentium 133, no worries.

I have a d-link wired ethernet router

:rant:I really wish they would stop calling these software based port blockers "firewalls".  I firewall is a hardware device the stops unwanted packets (and packet fragments) from reaching your computer or network.  A software "firewall" has already allowed the bad packet onto your network and to reach your computer, which (hopefully) simply discards it.  The difference in security between the two is huge.[/rant]
