King oyster - too much pins?

A few days age I placed a colonized Pl. eryngii block in fruiting conditions. The top has lots of pins, maybe too much.
Do I need to limit the number of pins in order to get a few decent fruits of this species?

It's an isolated strain.

no, do not remove pins, fruit it the way it is. Not all pins will mature, but that is okay. If you remove pins at this point the block is going to try and recolonize the damaged areas and not put as much energy into fruiting. Removing pins will also not make remaining pins grow larger. nice pinset by the way. This info is from my own personal experience. Others may have had other results.

I do agree with Norm all the way. It's normal to get all those pins. If you keep good conditions you'll get aroud 4 mushs. The substrat look to weight anough to get big mush. The nutrients in the subs. is a big factor too to get big mushs and a good second flush. If you don't know, the stem of this mush is good as the cap. They call that mush the King Oyster, and I agree, because he's the best of them. (with the Golden from my opinion).

Hey owl, what type of conditions did you fruit that in? Still trying to tweak my oyster set-up. Thanx.

i like the isolated culture better (single strain)(selective breeding)it is the special features that we seek to grow compare to multi it is the toss of the more dominate which is not always the best fruiter. plus if this was isolated as is ...that means there is a culture and i was going to ask if owl would willing to do a trade. peace siam

Norm, Mycololo,
Good info, as always. I did not touch the pins and some are taking of just like you said.

My fruiting chamber is an adaptation of mycololo's paper towel humidification tek (or at least how I understood it). It is basically a tub with the eryngii bag in the middle, on top I have placed an empty plastic crate (upside-down). I have put some paper towels over the crate and covered the whole thing with a clear plastic sheet except for a 20 by 20 cm opening on opposite sides next to the paper towel. A 5cm layer of water was put in the tub which is absorbed by the paper towels. Air blowing past the towels will humidify the tub. I need to replace the water in the tub every 2 days and replace the paper towels every 6 days.
The openings are placed in such a way that a draft is going through them (placed it next to a window that is opened slightly).

So far it seems to be doing well..

Great!
Now you can get high rank taste mushrooms. Rare ones at the supermarkets(for here).
If the atmosphere of the appartement where you installed the tub is between 15 and 20C, and because the pins set is done, you can now change the water only when you change the towels.
But if the temp of the app.is higher, you better change the water for cold one often like you're doing now. Best is 17-18C atm. temp.
After that you'll get another challenge: Try to have a second flush. I found few ways to get it with Eryngii.
After harvest, from my opnion, if you wait 8-16 hours to eat them the texture of the mush is at his best. Just put the mush in the fridg in a brown paper bag.
Try the Golden Oyster, the White Elm in tubs you'll love it. The White Elm, specialy, is realy easy to grow in tubs.
Good luck and i'm sure you're having fun.
PS If I can get my new camera I'll show you some of my tubs. I can put in up to 18 pds. of substrats and get pounds of mush per tub.

I am very curious about their taste. You can't find this species in the market here even though it is a native species here.
The temperature is 18 C

Updates:
Earlier - only a few pins continue growing..

But those pins get huge, they're as tall as the 3 kg substrate bag. I guess that these guys are ready for harvesting.

How should I proceed for the next flush?

WOW beautiful, these sure look ready for harvest to me ! depending on how much your substrate seems to have dried out, i would recommend a dunk - but only if its necessary.

With a 3 kg sub. you should get around .5 to.6 kg. of Eryngii. If not, nutrients are missing in the sub.
Now you can try this for the second flush. At the bottom of the sub bag you'll see (if not already) white "bumps". cut the bag around those only. If there are a lot, choose the biggest one. Now the sub bag cannot touch the water. Install something clean in the bottom of the tub to support the sub bag that will be just over the water. Keep your towells wet as you did. You'll now maybe see contam on the top, slow down the contam.
Another way is the shiitake method, your myc. has to be strong to do this and without contam. Take out the plastic bag, soak the block for 10 to 20 minutes only, and putt it back in the tub over the water.
I love this mush. with little salt, beside the rice.
Good luck and next try the White Elm
