I'm trying to format my PC that has XP home on it. I'm trying to set up a dual boot with unix/linux and XP for school. My problem is formating. I dont have a floopy drive to create a start up disk. Is there anyway to do this without purchasing 3rd party software?

Do you have a cd burner? You need some type of boot disk or install disk. The computer needs something loaded to run commands.

Its from a school text book. All it says is Red Hat Academy 7.3. The book says it needs its own partition to operate.
How do I get to a command line from the install disk?

Perhaps a silly comment but I'm fairly positive I didn't need a boot disk to format my comp. (XP Pro). I used the CD; and I put my setting so that the CD drive was the first thing read on bootup.

install XP first, it has a built in partition tool (that sucks) but will get the job done....
may I suggest purchasing a new hard drive?

Actually I just found partition magic on sale for $20. It retails for $60. I really didnt want to have to reinstall everything anyway. Thanx for the replies guys.

Download a knoppix cd. It has all the tools you will need.

Ever heard of FDISK? The only reason you need something fancy is if you want to keep your current XP setup. My distro has FDISK on the boot disk but then again, Redhat is teh gay. Go with Slackware. It's more stable, has better utilities and it's free.
