So my car has finally died on me after 260K. I have a really nice head unit, amps and speakers and figured I would hook it up in my home until I get a new car. How would power the head unit and amps?

Awesome idea. Ghost Dog does it in that movie. I imagine all you need to do is use a transformer to convert the 120v to 12v.

A 12V pwr supply is what you'll need.

Not sure. I'd guess that if it were enough to at least charge a car battery, then it would supply the necessary wattage. It would also depend on how you were setting it up. Using amp to power speakers or only head unit?
Too much trouble if you ask me. It'd be easier to go buy one of those $20 stereos at Walgreens if you just want to listen to music. If your really set on the sound and want to do this correctly so you don't overdraw it, I'd probably run it off of a battery that was hooked up to a trickle charger. Might be able to get by with big fat capacitor hooked directly up to the power supply. Try it and see.
Or do some research and figure out what kind of wattage all of your equipement would draw and figure it out from there.
