Gravity/perpetual motion/splashes/life/god/%&^&...

In my inevitable failure of an attempt create a perpetual motion machine using gravity, I am stumped with how liquid splashes higher than where it was originally dropped from. How does the liquid get the energy to travel higher than where it started from. Newton's first law would suggest this is impossible, or would it? Any comments or help would greatly ease my troubled mind...

The mass of the liquid that splashed is always less than the mass of the starting liquid. Less mass, same energy equals higher splash.
It's like a big guy jumping on the end of a sea-saw while a little guy sits on the other end. The little guy will fly a lot higher than where the big guy started.
The details are more complicated than that, but the general idea is there.

It's probably alot easier on the moon or someplace with less gravity. But I suppose it is possable on Earth...I think.

Nothing is life is free, including energy... you do not get more out of a system than you put in regardless of the planet, or satalite (i.e. the moon), that you happen to be experimenting upon.

Newtons laws of thermodynamics have been around for what... 300 years now... Lets just say I'm not going to hold my breath that energy can be created.

Newtons laws are old.
If this proves correct (link) we may have to re-write the rule book.

I think Heim theory assumes energy is conserved.
However, to look at this from a larger perspective, it is difficult to explain where the energy for the big bang came from.
In other words, the theory of thermodynamics neglects the ultimate source of energy. Like most theories in theoretical physics, it is positivist in nature and really only predicts observations to the extent they can be tested. The theory still has been proven true by every physical test man has devised, so it is pretty solid as far as anyone can tell.

First off any thoughts of making a perpetual motion machine fly in the face of thermodynamics. And thermodynamics is a heavily investigated theory that's stood up to hundreds of years of testing. That said it doesn't mean that one day it won't be disproved. But like another member said, I'm not holding my breath.
But on the subject of gravity and energy there's been some really interesting work on relatively new theories such as SuperString Theory, Holographic Principle and Loop Quantum Gravity that might one day lead to a better understanding of the origins of the Universe and underlying mechanisms of the laws of physics and makeup of matter.
