HOW A MUSHROOM FRUIT-BODY GROWS IN SIZE. 3

Understanding how a mushroom fruit-body grows in size is critical to optimal crop cultivation.
Plants and animals grow through cell division. Meaning, to get bigger they have to produce more cells, thereby increasing their mass in size.
Mycelium also grows by cell division.
However, a mushroom fruit-body does not grow by cell division.
A fully formed immature mushroom contains nearly the same number of cells that the large mature mushroom will have at its peak size.
How an immature mushroom exponentially increases in size very rapidly is by cell enlargement.
How fruit-body cell enlargement occurs, is that the mycelium pumps moisture by capillary action into the fruit-body cells, hyper- expanding, and inflating them with water. The same way a balloon expands exponentially in size, when you fill it with water.
A mushroom fruit-body can increase in size as fast as water can be pumped into its cells. That is how a mushroom can grow from an immature mushroom into a large mature mushroom, in a very short span of time.
Other than inherent genetic limitations, and nutrient availability, the size of a fruit-body is only limited by the availability & amount of moisture that mycelium can pump into it.
Another critical growth factor is that, mushroom fruit-bodies have no protective skin.
Mushroom fruit-body cells exchange gases directly with the surrounding atmosphere. Consequently, as mushroom fruit-bodies begin to expand in size, they require very high ambient humidity in their immediate environment, in order to grow to optimal fruit-body size.
Deprived of, or without high humidity in their immediate environment, fruit-body cells will lose moisture faster than it can be "pumped" into them. Resulting in an immediate drying effect that will cause abnormal growth, stunting, stems to split, caps to crack, and/or total abortion of all growth.

That was eye opening, I had made speculations on these lines but that was more articulated and itemized, by far.

So there you go kids, thats why we use the Rez effect when using small grains such as WBS and White Millet - to increase the available water potential within the substrate for the growing mycelial network. I hope you've all enjoyed this lesson

Damn fine read.......if there was an Agar's School I would definitely attend it....
That was very understandable...between Cell Division and Enlargement..

whats this say about alkaloid content, do we have the same amount of psilocybin/psilocyn in the immature fruits as in the mature ones? this of course directly relates to the potency of aborts and whether or not they are as strong as mature mushrooms

This has always been something that has puzzled me:
If the cells aren't dividing, then why do mature mushrooms weigh much more than small mushrooms when they are both dried out? If the only difference is water weight, why don't they weigh the same dry?

Well, wouldn't the cells have to grow to accomodate the water? Otherwise the water would end up bursting them after a critical point. This increase in cell mass would end up accounting for the extra dry weight.

it makes no semnse for t he shroom to weigh the same when its dry...it looses all of its water weight w hen it is dried...therfor it weighs alot less then its fresh weight..thats self explanitory

He was asking why the dry weight of a larger shroom would weigh more than a smaller dried shroom since there would be ~ the same amount of cells. Then someone noted that the cells would have to enlarge to accomodate the extra water etc

I would imagine that the cell wall would also have to thicken in order to accommodate the extra water weight. That is guessing that fungi support comes from the cell wall. I know plants use lignin for support. Could you enlighten us all mighty Agar.

Chitin is added to the cell walls to strengthen them, so they can support their own weight as they get bigger.

This also answers my question about the difference in size between my fruit bodies on two separate casings. Another question is how does this relate, if at all, to the time when the cap opens up?

If you look at the colonized substrate as a combination moisture / nutrient reservoir & pumping station. When the reservoir is pumped near empty, that triggers the caps to open.

so if a small immature shroom has the same amount of cells as a large mature shroom, then would they have the same amount of potency? if water and chitin are the only things added to a small shroom, then this doesnt effect the potency.
i have heard that aborts are high in potency for their size and matures are not as potent.
excellent read agar. that was very well written and much was learned from it. THANK YOU!

Sadly, that gets into gray area's that true experts (which I am certainly not) - with large budgets & labs - have not been able to answer.
My personal experience is that small young shrooms are by weight, more potent than older mature ones.
Never tried aborts, so know nada - there.

i have eaten 2.5g's in aborts and they are potent as hell!
same 2.5g's eaten of dried fruits from same batch 7 days earlier, worked... but aborts are better
