Sick of MP3 player FM transmitters
    #5189103 - 01/16/06 09:50 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

I have an Ipod 20 gig MP3 player. The thing works great. I've had it for almost a year and it has only gotten goofy a couple of times (which was easily fixed by rebooting it).

I then started thinking about getting an FM transmitter so I could listen to my music in my car. I first got a "Monster" brand transmitter. This thing plugged into my cigarette lighter and into my Ipod. It was a piece of garbage. The left channel would constantly cut out (I would have to hit it to get it to come back). The slightest bump would make the transmitter lose its saved station (which meant that I would have to enter it back in). The power of the transmitter was pretty weak (it was constantly being overruled by background noise). And lastly, the sound level and quality was quite poor. I was seriously dissapointed in this thing (especially because I paid $70 for it).

Today I got a iTrip FM transmitter. This thing is even worse than the Monster one. The transmitting power is pathetic. I have to hold the transmitter in particular spots near my radio to get a static-free sound. The interface blows as well (at least the Monster one had a decent interface). The sound quality and level is horrible (I would be better off just plugging in earphones while in the car). I am taking this thing back tomorrow.

I am now convinced that the only way to have decent sounding music in the car is just to put the CD in or to have a hard drive based stereo that sends the sound to the speakers through wire instead of a crappy little transmitter.

fm transmitters are more gimmicks than anything. avoid them if you actually intend to listen to music regularly.
