A Wooden Statue

I have a wooden statue here that I have had for years. It's roughly 12 inches tall, maybe a little taller and is really heavy because it is handcarved wood. So far I have maybe thought that this is Asian because the set had 2 guys with those asian funny hats, a buddha, and this guy. I split them up because they were causing me bad luck though must of you won't believe that. Anyway below is a picture just in case someone else might know more about this kind of stuff and might be able to help me set a period on when this was carved or whatever.

the finish mostly it still has a very clean gloss finish on an older piece of wood carving you would expect to see wear patterns on the outside edges give a duller flatter look on the outside edges and broader surfaces. Plus the quality of the carving suggest it was made for export/tourist sales.

Dang.. See my first thought that it was modern was because it is stained but then I realize there is no real certain timeline on stain. This could of been stained by anyone at any amount of time after it was made. I know it is hand carved though which makes it extra special to me. Probably gonna trade it off though at spf lol.

much of that depends on how often it's handled and it's exposure to light and chemicals as well as the finish it's self, a piece thats rarely handled will most likely not have wear, a good example is furniture, if a piece is boxed up in a warehouse for 100 years it'll look almost new if the conditions were right
conversly, modern 'antiques' are being produced throughout asia, these are peices that have been 'aged' or distressed in order to give the appearance of being the genuine article, my mom purchased a malasian made chest that was produced in this manor, the man tried selling it as an antique for a couple thousand dollars, she ended up paying $250 after pointing out that urethane finish and the staples that held it together were modern and if they were used simply for restoration/repair the piece would show some other form of jointery or at least the nail holes from it's original assembly.

thats the giveaway that it's actualy a modern piece, it;s a little too crude to have been produced more than 50 years ago, another giveaway is the wood it's made from, most actual antiques are made from closed grain woods as opposed to woods that have open grain resembling oak.

well that statue should come in a set of three perhaps that is causing your bad luck . He is one of the Three Star Gods of Happiness, Affluence and Longevity specifically you have Sau the god of Health and Longevity. He is carrying a peach in his hand which symbolizes immortality the particular peach in question only blooms every 3000 years.
