covering mouth of jar w. foil??

I've had trouble w. water getting in my jars during sterilization. I've heard people talk about putting foil over the mouth of the jar and then screwing the lid on over it. Will this allow sufficient air to escape during sterilization or is it a bad idea?? Thanks!!!!

ahha! answerable!
i know this from very recent experience, my first attempt:

1. after all jars are put in the pot, the water level must be lower than half-way up the jars.
2. after taping the lids to the bands, leave loose and cover with foil
3. boil as gently as possible

Real simple: Put the lids on tight and don't put so much water in that it will boil over the lids.
