Does anyone recommend a descent local source for Crushed Oyster shells to be used in casing. I was also wondering about hydrated lime. I have read a lot about the ph levels in preparing casings. Is it best to get some kind of tester for checking the ph level of soil, or is just mixing as per ryche's tek sufficient enough. Just for experimentation I set up a couple small 2 cake casing trays with only dampened verm on top and bottom just to see how it works. Does ryches tek work quite a bit better than the straight verm casing? Thanks in advance

i wondered where to obtain oyster shell, too... so i went to a beach covered with crushed oyster shell... bagged some up and stashed it in my freezer.. does anyone see any problems with this? how coarse/fine need it be? hydrated lime can be bought from any gardening or seed store. if you follow the instructions for the 50/50+ casing, i dont think a ph tester is necessary... ...iago

i use crayola (i think) chalk that i get in teh school supplies aisle. 89 cents for like 12 stix and i use about one stick per large (1' x1.5') casing with 1:1 peat/verm. works excellent so far.

You can search pet shops that work with birds food, oyster shells is also used with pigeons. Also natural grit (for pigeons) contains a mixture of oyster shell, silica and a porous rock (made of red clay i think), can be used for casing layers. Peace, MAIA Peace, MAIA
