What area of college to go into?

Hi, thanks a lot for your interest in this post.
Coming off a serious addiction which has left me in ruins for the last two years, I am getting around to the important things in life like finishing school and then going to college.
I hear all the time how this person took this and that, and now they work at McDonalds.. At school as a kid teachers gave us the impression that if you get good grades and finish college you will have a nice job and everything will work for you. Slowly I have realized that this is not true.
It worries me how many people finish college/university and dont find the job they desired..
I know the trades are good, but im pretty much done working with my hands im looking for something a little easier in the white collar industry.
I ask: What courses in college do some of you recommend to take, area's that are most successful for getting jobs when you are finished.
Take note I am not American, I reside in Ontario Canada, close to Toronto, so that might change your advice a little since the economy is slightly different.
Thanks a lot for taking your time tonight to help me, I appreciate it and will definitely return the favor if the opportunity arises.
Have a good night every1!

First off let me say that those people are working there probably because they didn't major in a degree whose job positions are relatively tangible. Also, they could just be lazy and not have any aspirations...
I know a few people who want to major in Math Science. That sounds good and all, but the truth is that not that many people who obtain that degree are going to end up working for some high paying military contracted company.
I would advise you to pick something to major in that interests you and has obtainable careers.
I've got a question for you. What are you interested in and what would you like to see yourself doing for a job or a career?

Well, what I'd advise you to do is go to look up some colleges around your area online. You can look at their course offerings, programs, and certs or what ever else they have to offer.
Maybe you'll see a degree in Forestry, Business/Business Management, or some certification classes so you could possibly start a home renovation business.
Do you have enough money for college? It gets very expensive.

There are three types of people that go to college:
1. People that go and don't finish.
2. People who go, finish, and get a "useless" degree(liberal arts, philosophy, etc..). These people don't find decent paying jobs usually.
3. People who go, finish, and get a degree that you can earn money with (engineering, law, etc..).
If you are going to be a #1 or a #2, don't go to college. If you are going to be a #3 and you have something you truly are interested in, go to college.

Somebody on here has a degree in Forestry. He never found a forestry job and he thinks his degree is useless.

my mom was a social worker and she had a degree in psychology. i think they have alot of wildlife degrees which most end in working at the forest service(which is not bad in any way).
just a little idea on combining your interest. how about something around the lines of rescuing endangered animals and educating children on how to protect them, i dont know what the degree would be but im sure they have something. and as for the home renovating you could always have that as a hobby.

Quite frankly, if you're not going to master a trade, a degree is a big bonus when applying for a job. Especially if you don't have a lot of experience.
If two people are competing for a job with similar experience, the one with the degree will usually get it; even if it's a philosophy degree.
Also, having a degree is becoming very common so it may be tougher to get a job since it won't set you far apart from the pack.

I have known myself in a way I doubt I would have ever occurred except as it did. Smith, P. Bull. You're absolutely right. I'm a lib arts casualty. It sucks. If you go to college be sure to learn an actual trade.

I was referring to bachelor degrees. A lot of the "useless" degrees only offer job opportunities to people who get PhD's and become teachers.
If you get a bachelor's degree in Philosophy you will be working at McDonald's.

You don't need a degree to succeed in life. Why not a start a business, utilize the environment, build a small farm for vegetables and herbs to supply local markets with organics... It's endless. College is the easy way out for someone with potential.. Some people like to carve a way through a career than get a free pass at middle class, thus school is NOT required if you can push yourself! Fuck school( for now). UNITE all bearers of hard labor and business ethics.

I also forgot to mention I enjoy making music, I have a soundclick website where I sell hip hop instrumentals to rappers for reasonable prices..
But the chances of making it in such a competitive industry are small, thanks for the info guys I appreciate it, im just going to have to do this on my own.. Im looking at maybe a teacher, something in the health industry.. Anything at all, I dont care if I dont like it that much.. as long as I make a reasonable living I will find ways to like it

just go to where you see the most chicks at!
hmm, ok maybe not...
business tends to be a somewhat safe degree. depends how you use it afterwards...

unless you have a true knack for business, or are very inspired I don't recommend it. It's not for everybody. Expect to want to kill yourself while studying it... or was that just me?

I wasn't satisfied with the courses at my college, they just seemed boring, except for Horticulture. It's been a good course so far. I'll most likely end up working in a nursery or greenhouse not making the best money, but it will be enough to live off of. Thats all I care about as long as I enjoy my job.
