the jar that was going the fastest for me which was about 80% colonized was infected with some green mold in the area where the mycelium wasnt, does this mean that the myc. will simply take it over, or is this jar done for, also could i stlil use the noncontaminated part in a casing?

hairs,
Chuck it
If you take the jar to the sink and open it up.
I have a disposal....btw
I scooped it out and took a close look.
I dumped it down the disposal.....and bleached my sink.
You will see that alot of it is running through the whole jar.
Sorry to hear you got the Green Stuff.
I had 3 jars go bad myself.

I never have any mold. The bacteria exterminate them all!

Very good question!
1. Crops like wheat, rye, and even rice can be attacked by these bacteria which produce alcohol. Dunno english name... Now. When you open the "culture" you can feel the stench of a destillery...
2. Rot. Stench.
3. No micelium, no mold: this is a sign... but the best sign:
4. If the substrate gets unreally more WET than at the beginning, that can only be the work of bacteria.
But stench when opened is the sure sign, and if you are experienced enough, you can differenciate between them by smell. I wish you never get as experienced in bacteria as I am...!

... and a slight change in color.... It's like the difference between dry and wet, just that it' even more dark then absoulely wet. But this is not that easy to see...

Alcohol is produced by yeasts, not bacteria.

contrary to all your advise, i went ahead and cased what was not contaminated. i used straight verm, and a lot of h202 which i hope will help with contams. is there any way that this could work? the substrate made for a weak layer, 1/2 inch at most.
