blue thumbs compost
    #517931 - 01/11/02 10:20 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

This will be the thread where dimitri describes his compost. And anybody who has experience with it can chime in as well.
Whats in it, whats the composting method (indoor steam 7 day method, outdoor short/long composting etc).
Whats the shipping moisture content.
Is it pasteurized, sterilized?
thanx

I will do the best I can with the description dimitri is out for a bit.

The compost is a wheat straw based compost the start was 5 bales for wheat straw mixed with about 100 pounds of horse dung.
then we added rape seed, peats moss, urea gypsom, water the whole process took 35 days to complete.

After it was complete we started to pasturize it and bag it up for sale.
We had been posting pics before our house was broken into and I have asked that he not post pics or advertise as much.
The only one to post results beside dimitri was ralphster44 he said it was great stuff. We use it still and have great results off of 5-7 pounds we get about 80 dry grams first flush give or take 10 grams.
The compost is almost gone and it is to cold to make more this time of year (winter in the north)
So we have 100 pounds left and no one has said anything bad and several have used it.

If you need more info you will have to wait until d get's home tomorrow.

sounds like a winning formula(although I can't help but chuckle everytime I buy rape seed), and the timeline is pretty good (35 days seems a little long, but I guess it depends on weather & stuff).

Has it been sitting around for long?

" I will do the best I can with the description dimitri is out for a bit."
So, who are you, partner, roomate?

sorry to hear about the house. I hate theives with a passion. If you find them, lemme know, we'll......well, you know what we'll do.

Has it been sitting around for long? Not for to long about 80 days or so.

" I will do the best I can with the description dimitri is out for a bit."
So, who are you, partner, roomate?

I am his girlfriend of 5 years and 1 1/2 kids I had to sit and smell it everytime he turned the huge pile it would take about 4 hours to do it all. then watering it etc...

And it wasn't the fact of what was taken (we can and or did replace that stuff) but the fact that I felt violated.

We had a cool end of the year and it took a little longer to heat up and some other things I remember him bellowing about.

Hardly any smell to it..other then smelling kinda like dirt. If it did smell like shit then the compost would be worthless. The package came in a regularPriority mail box..very descret.

Congradulations on getting fruits your first time.

Now you can move on to making your own cakes.

Then you can case those cakes.

As you can see the only things you need to buy online are spores.

Yeah, but neither cakes nor casings are even going to come CLOSE to the amount of shrooms you get with dung. Not even close.

From the looks of things you should have stuck with cakes. Youll get at least as many mushrooms as you've got there from one cake.

Supershroomer: I see no huge flush in the pictures.

I count about (40) 1-inch pins in that tub. If all those grow to their potential, he is looking at about 65-80 grams dry a flush. It is proven the mushrooms grow bigger on dung, because of the richer nutrients. That will be 5 or 6 times what he would get from a single cake.

I would like to see some pictures of good flushes from this compost. I keep seeing post about the compost, but I have yet to see some pictures of the final product. I saw the ones you posted a long time ago dimitri, but besides those I haven't seen any. Just curious. Maybe will get to see some pictures of mature flushes from this compost soon. The above pictures are nice and they show strong rhizomorphic growth, but I want to see the mature flushes.

When did I promote it? I dont remeber (I am not trying to be a dick). Well if I did say something about it would probably be the results that dimitri has had with the compost. Don't worry about flaming me (I know your not), I try not to take things like that seriously. This stuff sounds good though. From what dimitri has said, and I trust what he says. There is the spam you were looking for

It looks to me that this is the type of compost that would benefit from a casing of 50/50. Just a thin layer maybe 1/2-1 inch. That will cause the mycelium to become less dense at the surface and cause aggressive pinning. But from the looks of it you could give that surface some deep scratching for the second flush and have a bigger second flush than the first. Also keep light on that thing for at least 8 hours a day. You still have a lot of shrooms left in there, just adjust the conditions. Nice documentation

why would you add a casing layer? Why would there be overlay if there was no casing layer? What was the dry weight of that first flush?

I'm with ryche on the 80 and 50 gram flush deals, the few pics I've seen of this compost look closer to 80g wet than 80g dry

I cant help but call you out on this one Dimitri. Your claims of 80 grams dry 1st flush, 50 grams dry 2nd flush on average.
I have not seen any pictures from your compost come anywhere close to that from the post I have seen.

You just just posted a picture of a 2nd flush from your compost in this thread a couple of days ago and that is no where close to 50 grams. You would be lucky to get about 14 dry grams from that. More like 10 in reality. And where is the picture from the first flush??

I mean come on, lets get real. I think its great your offering up compost for so cheap. Making it and shipping it is a lot of work.
But there is no need to put claims on it that are far from the truth. Even those nice pics Shaunstainblue posted above. A nice looking first flush but it will only dry out to about 28 grams tops I will guess.

Feel free to prove me wrong

The compost wars of '02?

This is just an observation, but if you believe this guy is to be believed I believe you are either unbelieveably naive or you haven't been paying attention or you just didn't read the threads proveing this to be the case.

The miracle compost is only one example. The proof is all over this site, at least in the posts that weren't later edited or deleted.

I commend you for requesting proof about the compost claims.

Here is a picture of the final results of 2 brf/verm cakes cased with coco coir by bizarro. The 2 biggest caps have been cut off for printing. In the room it took to hold that "compost" you could have had 4 of these trays at least.

I have severe doubts about the 80 grams dry claim as well, and perhaps I'm just trying to make myself feel better as I have quite a bit of the compost on the way in the mail, but remember that Shaunstainblu used only half a pint of colonized rye berries in this, which is not too much. I'm not entirely sure of how much the quantity of substrate matters when using compost though...

I wouldn't doubt the 80 grams dry .. the pictures of that flush didn't look too hot ... overlay, should have cased...

It does not appear to be as large as you claim but it still looks pretty good. I would not complain.

The fact that he only used a 1/2 pint of substrate will make very little difference with the first flush. We only use 1 to 2 pints of substrate with the DB kits.
Just as with the DB kits, if you use more then one bag of grain, the only place you see much of a difference is on the 3rd through 4th flush.
You tend to get larger flushes then and most of the mushrooms will have grain attached to the base. Once most of the nutriants have been used by the compost, the mycelium  then starts utilizing the grain in the later flushes. Remember, 95-99% of the substrate being used is compost, not the grain spawn.

And no this is not a compost war. In fact I give praise to Dimitri for making this service available while he did. Making and shipping compost is no easy task. Im just saying he needs to be honest and post more realistic numbers of how big of flushes his compost is capable of. Certainly your going to get decent flushes from it, as in the pics above. But still I have not seen a single pic from Dimitri or anyone else useing his compost  that comes anywhere close to his 80g 1st flush, 50grams 2nd flush claims. Not even 1/2 of that.
So that is why I'm busting his balls on this one

I thought that might be the case, but I was hoping not. I did get a dung brothers kit before they went on hold, and even without the ideal enviroment it produced more than advertised. I hope they come back soon...

Iam not mocking Shaunstainblu's work, and I do not believe anyone is saying he claimed his flush was 80 grams. That was Dimitri's claim. It is just that for a while now, I have been playing attention to see if Dimitri would post other pics to show us the potential for this compost, but he has not. I saw a few pics of some small flushes you posted a while back but that was it. I have not seen Ralph pictures. On dimitri's web site he compares his compost to some top notch compost. When you make a claim like that, you have to be able to back it up.Up to this point I have yet to see one pictures that would make this compost impressive or very effective for that matter. Iam not saying it is not. However, I am saying that you are making a pretty darn hefty claim and you have no pictures to back it up.I know you stated in the start of this thread the reason's why you have not posted your pictures, but I don't know dimitri. Iam not comparing your compost to any other. You are the one that does that on your web site. I have plenty of pictures to show excellent compost at work. Forgive me if I sound rude, but I could get the above results or any of the results you have posted from a bag of store bought compost. Actually, I have seen far superior flushes from store bought compost. Again, Shaunstainblu's this thread was not written to put down your work. Heck, for your first time dealing with a dung based compost, you did well. I believe that compost itself is lacking.I believe that because I have not seen pictures that would tell me otherwise.

Again here is a pic (not very good at all) but it will hand out a general Idea of a couple fruits of the docs compost

I hope to get a camera tomorrow. I love the compost. Sooooo nicely done. The new batch seems even richer...and the TON of spawnmate(?) is interesting too...
For now here are a couple of teaser pics...

For those of you who are a little shy below the belt we do not recommend injesting the compost or spawn mate even though they can offer help in creating BIG fruits

3.34 MP

Go to http://www.shopharmony.com/ and look for the Kodak DX-3700, it has 3.1 megapixels and is $225 new at this site... you can go for a 2.1 megapixel camera if you want, very cheap, $133. Search for SIPIX SC-2100 on the website www.nxgenstore.com... These are high resolution cameras for real cheap... I've been shopping for one myself for a few weeks now, hope this helps you out-

With the Kodaks, I think you also have to pay $80.00 for a docking station.

I don't believe you have to have the dock station to use the camera... it takes regular AAs and comes with a USB cord... The docking station makes it easy to download the pics to your comp and it recharges the optional battery pack, but to use the camera and put images on the computer you dont need the dock(why it's optional)-

Here is another testament of our compost

I am having great luck so far...on the 1st straw based batch, I am getting 15- 65 gram wet specimens!! I shit you not. See the shitty webcam pic of a 57 g. er w/ a closed cap!
The new batch, w/ the spawn mate seems even better so far. Seems colonized at 4 or 5 days. I will report on the spawnmate when i can!
thanks again bro- a diehard fan for the winter!

Just one specimen per flush or are there more?So far, I only see pics of single mushies. The two above are nice and big, but I'm more interested in the overall flush results. I guess you will post pictures of a full flush when you have them.
