All I know, which may be wrong, is that it has something to do with rye bread growing mold or fungis. Something to do with LSD.

i think the egot is a fungus that grows on the end of rye grass. like a mini-shroom. it has lsd. i wish i had the skills for alkaloidal extractions.

to the extent of my knowledge, ergot contains LSA, a precursor to LSD. It grows on rye, and will destroy entire crops if untreated, so farmers usually use fugicides to kill it. According to a book i had "Practical LSD Manufacture" By Uncle Fester, if you search around the outer edges of a rye field, you could find some plants infected with ergot. It isn't the safest stuff to handle, and can cause gangreen (spelling) if not taken care of properly. Using ergot directly from rye to produce LSD is very costly considering the amount of rye you would need to grow. The process to transform it from its raw form to LSD is also costly and difficult. Practical LSD Manufacture is kinda an oxymoron, as there is no practical way to produce personal amounts. To make the process cost effective, you would need to create 1000's of doses, and then comes the problem of getting rid of it all without getting caught. This is hindered by the fact that many of the chemicals used are on government watch lists, an any attempt to purchase large quantities of these chemicals would most likely result in the DEA knocking at (or kicking in) your front door. If you are interested further, i recomend the book, it is quite interesting, and lists all the steps in the process. There is also a chapter on extracting a psychedelic chemical from calimus, a common swamp grass, that seems much more practical then trying to make LSD. -zero

Submerged ergot cultures have been sucessful. Look on Rhodiums site for a growth medium. Just wear gloves since ergot causes st anthony's fire....gangrene.

The highest concentration of the akaloids are in the slerotium of the fungus. No one has succesfully grown sclerotia of Ergot in cultivation. Pharmaceutical companies still pay farmers of rye to harvest sclerotia to obtain the alkaloids to produce Ergotamine tartrate. The mycelium itself has been cultured on media and in liquid, but no sclerotia!!!! If you could you would be making a fortune!!!!!!!!! Liquid culture may eventually stop the harvesting of wild sclerotia. But it is still harvested from RYE.
